I was out of it for about 7 years and during that time I got my general class ham ticket.

I think that CB is more fun.

Sure , talking to distant places is really great and all of the ham gear is neat to tinker with but I had more fun on the CB.

On the CB you can hear people pushing their radios to the limit of their performance and enjoy doing it. ( it may not always be within the rules but I find it entertaining to listen to!)
On HF ham you'll hear "don't turn your mic gain too high". ( you might actually sound loud )
And speech processor FORGET IT ! Even though all of the modern HF rigs have them , it seems that if you use one you will be dammed to hell for all eternity.
On the CB you can talk to your friends , family or anyone at all . Anyone can use a CB ( no pointless test to take )

The thing that turned me off the most about ham radio is that too many hams seem to be self appointed radio police. And they are willing to "nark" on their brother hams at any moment if they did not like the way someone was operating their station.

Who could enjoy an environment like that ?

So I found myself looking into CB again.
Now my long time friend is going to set up a base at his home as well. AND I must say it seems that there is somewhat of a resurgance of CB popularity, I still see more CB antennas on vehicles than ANY other kind of 2-way radio antenna!
The only thing that bums me out about CB is foul language on the air. I feel that this is really juvenile .

Oh well, I just had to vent.

I agree with you. CB just has that "fun" thing that Ham doesn't. But each has it's place a guess. But CB is the best. And I have seen more CB antennas as of late to. I can't wait to get my base antenna up, not only for local stuff, but I love to shoot skip. I can spend hours doing that. Yes, CB is KING!

Great Lakes, welcome back to CB radio. I have only been in it since 1973. Still love it. I hear the lousy fowl lanquage whether I am on cb or on sales calls. I like the fact that I do not have to be a expert at something to talk to people. A friend of mine asked me about them last night, and I told him that this hobby is hotter than ever. Yes, there are not as many base stations, but as as I also pointed out, it is tough to stop a cb signal, during times of crisis. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it! I use it for business, FUN and to pass the time of day. Enough said. Welcome back, and enjoy it!!!!!!!

Welcome Great Lakes. You'd be surprised at the number of hams who just want to enjoy the radio who are returning to cb. I'm one myself. We have several in my neck of the woods. The reason seems to be the same: some of the hams act like they own certain frequencies, if you are not already in their little loop you're treated as if you are not welcome, and you will be made fun of if you slip and use some term that is not strictly ham. Mainly, it is too straight laced and unnatural. It's too much work! CB is fun and you can be loud and proud and not be shot down.

Tell us about your station.

My stuff, Imax-2000 ,Galaxy 2547 base, Radio shack TRC 449 mobile on a power supply, A BIG J.C. Penny am ssb mobile (needs repair) LMR-400 coax, In the mobile Midland #4001 AM only,- 7' ft tall firestik (copper night stick same thing) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOBILE ANTENNA. All of the radios have custom mic elements or something similar for better TX audio.

I'd like to say thanks for welcoming me back to CB. That was great!
Ham radio was never that "down to earth" kind of friendly.

Cheers!

Your welcome, Great Lakes. Radio should be fun not work. Many hams make it more like a high school exam. You always feel like that teacher is standing right over you. Not very comfortable.

I see you have the LMR-400 coax and Imax. I use those two together also. I love my Imax and I'm sold on the LMR-400 coax. You don't lose much of your signal at all with it and the ears..well, people would just have to try it.

I've been happy with an Imax and DavisRF bury-flex. You can put it directly in the ground (antenna's away from the house a tad) The Bury-flex has very similar properties as the LMR400 and goes on a standard PL259. Not sure on price comparison as I don't know the price of LMR-400. But if the wife wants it buried....... this is a good choice, just FYI.

Chad, they are about the same thing, same loss and quality. It makes a world of difference in your station on a long run, doesn't it? I know a guy who complains about not being able to hear very good. I can't convince him that it is his 150 + feet of rg 58 "mobile" coax that is stealing his signal.

Hey, Great Lakes...welcome back to Cb....It's not quite as "stuffy" here as it is on the other bands.

I still find it fun.

Is LMR 400 thicker than RG58? Going to do my Spring time coax replacement and been having my eye on that LMR400. I only need about a 40 foot run. Will that make a diff if only 40 feet? Base station btw.

Yes, considerably larger. It's the same diameter as RG-8. It's actually a replacement for RG-8.

Hotwire for a 40 ft. run on cb it's not that critical. If you are in fact replacing the rg 58, mini 8 would do fine and rg 8 would be better and 213 better if you run lots of power and LMR-400 even better. But at this short distance the differences would be slight. Still, I'm sold at this point, I personally would run the LMR-400. I realize this would be overkill but I'm on that kick now.

I thought the LMR-400 needed a "special PL259" as it is thicker than RG8 and more designed for an "n" connector.

I've never used it so I had to check the specs and the outer diameter is 0.405" just like RG-8. This paragraph is taken from the spec sheet about connectors:

Connectors: A wide variety of connectors are available for LMR-400 cable, including all common interface types, reverse polarity, and a choice of solder or non-solder center pins. Most LMR connectors employ crimp outer attachment using standard hex crimp sizes.

welcome back to 11 meters.I know what you mean about some people on the ham bands trying to be cops cause they do it here also. But there is a trade off though. On ham you dont get truckers coming through your area on a channel your talking on like on CB radio.I mean you have people on CB radio that really wanna cause you trouble and in a bad way too.so i agree cb is fun but there is a trade off of the two ham and cb.I LIKE THEM BOTH.but is cb radio more fun?hmmm i guess in a way yes it is.But i was lucky that everyone i talk to on the ham bands use to talk to me on 11 meters also so i have fun.I dont do all that much dxing on ham i do that more on cb kinda funny huh?anways welcome back..~freebird~

Welcome back to 11 meters!

I like talking on CB best, also. The people tend to be nicer and much less "preachy"

Hope to QSO with you on the Copper net!
