dx has greater coverage, the saturn has echo. the saturn has a built in 2 pill (the 2970 does to. the dx has much better ear's sence they redesigned and white noise is almost non exsistant, the earlier models were very noisy and covered long distance coverups.

what would i chose? a 2985dx and a small 2 pill amp, cheaper and the power supply wont fail when you really tune the radio up.if you must have the power built in get a 2995dx, shure they dont come with echo but the radio is a better design

Actually, I meant to type 2995dx rather than 2950. How does this compare to the old Saturns?

Not to change the subject, but I've got a brand spankin' new 2950dx, and it has the NOISIEST receive. I don't know if I'm just spoiled with my Cobra 2000, but I almost can't even listen to my 2950dx anymore. I've never had it tuned(aside from adding extra freq's), but if there is a way to improve receive quality, I would like the radio so much more.

when they redesigned the radio it really quieted the front end on them. the saturn turbo is much easier to work on. like i said the turbo has echo, if you like echo its somthing to consider. the older turbos have weak power supplys when you raise the power levels. the 2995dx is the same way. there really isnt to much different between them besides 10 years. the turbos seem to get about 400 these days, and the 2995 is in the 5's. personally i have used a turbo and a regular dx 2985. the built in lineir doesnt make much of a difference. i would get a 2985dx and a small base linier. you will get better results and your not dealing with sombodys hack job (10+ year old radios generally have seen a few hacks) well that and there in the low 400's new.

Chime in here, 808. What is your take on the 2985 with say a 200 watt amp compared to the performance of the 2995dx tuned by copper with build in box?

Mikefromms,

Sorry, I can't be of much help here.

Our 2995DX is going on 4 years old and we have never had any problems with it.

Also my Galaxy Saturn Turbo (Gift) is now going on 2 years old and again NO Problems and I love it.

Never owned or used a 2985DX yet.

4 years running all day and no problems. Wow. I read you leave your radios on a lot.

I believe the Galaxy turbo has stronger audio/punch, and louder modulation without over driving its Audio circuits, but the Ranger 2985DX has much better receive.

Its more sensitive, yet better filtered with a lower internal noise floor.. However, if there is actually noise on the frequency, of course any radio that has good receive, will pick it up as well, unless you have a multi-thousand ham/commercial, and/or military radio with advanced IF DSP processing technologies to remove such noise via noise reduction from the frequency itself.
