In 1977, I had a Midland 23 (Don't remember the model) that had an auto scan on 9 & 19, barefoot with a firestick on my wagon. I was driving from Los Angeles to San Diego California.

Almost in San Diego, I intercepted a report from a frantic woman who was trying to raise someone to report a Bank Robbery in progress. I could even hear gun fire.

Since I was a Public Service Minded kind of guy, and got excited I relayed the information to the local California Highway Patrol, who was monitoring Ch-9, and could not hear the lady.

So I reported the robbery at the Bank of America on Broadway Blvd (if memory serves me). They took my name and address, and responded to my report with 9 units.

After I arrived at my house -about an hour later, I was arrested for giving a false report and my radio was confiscated.

A couple days later, they returned my radio with an apology. It seems that the lady had also took my name off the radio report, and had registered a complaint with the local police department because no one had responded to the robbery.

It seems that I had neglected to ask the lady.... "What City"......

That is right, the robbery was taking place in Phoenix Arizona. Oops!

"No good deed goes unpunished"

No one offered to refund my bail fees either! And I had to reinstall the radio myself. LOL

That's a bummer. I heard a call for road assistance on 9 one time. Turned out the person was several states away.

Oh, keep up the posts--you are about to hit advanced status.

It has happened more than once, I thought I was talking to a local contact on 19, and they were in another City several hundred miles away.

You gotta ask!

Here in Clearwater back 30 years ago Clearwater and Orlando had one frequency that was the same. Now at 120 miles that is no problem on 460 mhz EXCEPT when tropo ocures. Well just a few nights a year the duct would be just right and both citys had no problem hearing even walkie talkies.
Well no problem they simply dispached each other calls! ...... And yes had a bit of fun with the rare evening.
NOTE in florida in the spring and fall we get tropo so strong that you can work 300 miles on 2 and 440 with a 4 watt radio.... from the jail i have worked Alabama from the parking lot..... With a IC-2t HT!
