Now that I'm 35 and got few dollars to play with, I finally have a cb radio. I always wanted one growing up in OH in the 70s. Well, now that I have it, I have few questions. I've searched the web all over, I can't find an answer. THIS VERY forum has been the best source of info for CB. So, I thought I try askng the question here...

So, now, finally, I hope you don't mind few questions from a completely noob.

1) I seem to be getting lots of traffic on channel 35. Is this channel special in some way, like channel 19 and 9 ?

2) What is the best way of finding out how my radio is working ? What's an good way of doing a radio check with multiple people to see how far I am reaching ?

3) Is it rude to join a conversation already in progress ? I have a group of people locally that seems to know each other at certain channels.

4) How do I find people to talk to ? Channel 19 is too over loaded. It's mostly truckers anyway, who'd be out of range in 10 min or so. So, where do I go ? (I think I may know a answer to this....join cef ?)

Well...I think that is about it. Appreciate any answers you can give me !

Ken

Hi Yes Now that your Register on the copper board sign up with the CEF Radio Club and jion us on Sunday morning's on Channel 13 27.115 AM at 10am CDT
Now for local talking all I can say is run the channel's and see where most and ask if there is a local channel that everyone on.
Now being rude to join in, it's not really rude to join in to someone else conversation if you ask for a break first and then let them know your the kid on the block and like to join in, most of the time they will let you join right in ,then you can get your radio check's etc...
Hope this helps

What are you hearing on 35? Could be a CB shop on that channel or could be a couple of drivers that are passing thru and they've been rag chewing for the last 200 miles.. Could be a local hangout channel..
CB shops, Truck washes, Mobile antenna shops run usually CH 34, 35, 36 Whatever they've chosen to run is where they are. No set rules or anything like that for picking a channel.
If you hear some locals talking,,, durring a lull in the convo just ask for a "break" and ask whoever answers if your radio sounds alright , ask him his handle and tell him yours and go from there.. Welcome to the bands, this is a great time to get into CB'ing as the sun spots are declining and the band is clear of static... usually..

As far as i know channel 35 is not special.
But, in your area it may be. Listen for
awhile to find out whos running on it.
Ask for a break and introduce yourself.
Ask where there located and ask them
how your radios working. It is not rude
if you ask for a break first.
After your on for awhile things will fall
into place for you and your get to meet
different people. Good Luck with your new
hobby.

Starface is right join us on sundays.

As for making shure your radio is working right one good toy to have is a DOSEY style of meter to test modulation power and SWR..... Copper sells several good meters and they are always good to have.

Hey Bruce... How do you like that Rad Shack DSP Box??
KennJen, you can always sign up for the CEF Net, get a CEF number and monitor 13 LSB (27.115) and get someone there to talk to...
Welcome to the Radio Hobby it's kind of like the game of golf, the more you get into it the more you'll want and the more you'll spend. And your wife well, she just won't get it... Just kidding!!!

thanks for inputs..

apparently, channel 35 is a local hang out channel. I mustered up a courage to talk to people on it today and asked some questions.

TOM: yeah...u r right about the wife thing.
