I have owned exports and still own 2 amateur radio HF transceivers. But after being a CBer since 1963, I keep coming back to the Uniden sideband mobile radios. Yes, I've had Brownings and many of the good older CB radios, including a Cobra 2000 GTL. At present I use a Uniden Grant XL on the base, and like the way it operates and have been getting very good reports with it.

Love working my Grant XL (Astatic 575) barefoot in my Grand Chero w/ wilson 2000 trucker top and center. ALWAYS get loud reports.
I use a Galaxy Pluto (Base T-UG D-104 or a LOT of different hand power mics) in the base with a Palomar 225 hooked the Antron99 40ft up to feedpoint.
S-9 is a new favorite..never used a radio that HONESTLY does NOT benefit from a power mic! Not noticably anyways...thats what they tell me. :-)
Not sure whether it'll be a base or mobile unit soon.

base on SSB is an icom ic735. talks 40-60 watt SSB dx 95% of the time. will go to the AR3500 for 150+ watts if QRM is REALLY rough. icom can can really pull OUT the signals, though! no added power for AM in the base, so it just depends on my mood. they ALL get a workout on AM. again, the AR3500 if it's rough, otherwise the icom or S9 get the nod most often.

mobile? HAH! uniden grant XL hands down no questions asked 100% of the time. let's say, 'it gets out'

I like useing my Ranger 696FD1 as a base best and then my Grant XL. My 696FD1 has the extra channels maybe thats why I like it best but it does sound better than my Grant.

Wish I could soon get an S9 for my base.

I LIKE THAT YANKEE!!!

did work on a couple original 696f mobiles, & 1 fd1. i know my XL both outhears & outtalks 'em. the 696's have a different board in 'em, they are all galaxy, not as sensitive as the older uniden chassis'(2547 base, 949, 959,TR396,399,696,699 & new 900's are all the same) have you ever done the receiver mods to the XL, airplane? they are even easier then the xmit mods!
& they do make a difference. just ask bruce. channel mods for XL are easy, too. ONLY DIFFERNECE in freqs will be XL will start & end 1 channel HIGHER then the tr696fd1.
the omega IS $60 cheaper, basically the same as the S9 xmit & rcv-wise. just cpu controlled where the S9 is more CB-like. i don't think you could go wrong with either one!

Chad, I have had that same setup and it is as good as any and cost-effective. Radio + amp + Imax + coax = less than $500. I love those Magnum mobiles as a base station. How about them ears?
