As Winnie the Pooh would say, "OH Bother"! I am about to trade pickups--S10-to S10. I have 5 antennas and 3 radios and two amplifiers to remove along with all the assorted fuse blocks and cables from battery back to the rear bumper.
About a 3 hour job. Makes me want to forget about trading! But (sigh) old truck has 134,000 miles on it and is somewhat beat up (that way when I got it) Gas gauge doesn't work, driver's door is hard to close (hinges need replacing. Still runs strong (Hey, it's a Chevy--whaddya expect? :-) )
Found another S10 that belonged to an older gent. Only differences is it has auto tranny, tilt and cruise. Interior and finish are like new, new tires, bedliner looks new, HD Reese hitch, drives smoothe as silk. The drawback is my truck is a '97 and the other truck is a '97, so I am not moving "up", but I am getting a truck with way less miles, looks like new and drives like new for not much "boot". At 66,000 miles, this truck would last me for many years (like maybe 10?) OTH, I could keep driving my other one until the transmission/clutch goes out, or some other unforeseen problem happens and just keep fixing it. I've got a "good" truck now, but you can't keep 'em forever. And I don't have all those pesky radios to remove and re-install. Then, again, my vehicle tax bill won't go up, either--only collision somewhat. So I'm wavering between trading and keeping my old one. Decisions, decisions (sigh).

Congrats on the upgrade, Look on the bright side.... At least it's the same truck and you don't have to re-engineer anything :-) It should drop right back in!

How do you feel about going Auto? I've only owned one auto in my life and did not like it (but I'm a gearhead), I feel REALLY weird in the wife's durango. I keep stomping in an imaginary pedal coming into curves or stopping! Door pins arent that bad, Clutches last a long time as I replaced mine at 90,000 miles and I drag raced it every weekend (it was a good clutch though). I have owned both Chevy's and Dodges, the monte carlo (bought when I was 15) had 280,000 miles on it when it burnt to the ground, had a caddy (THE auto) for 1 month, (grrr) bought the Dakota, it has 140,000 HARD miles, it has been turn key, with the exception of a radiator vs. rock incident and a new clutch. AC went out at 130K and I put a new comp in form the junkyard, Ice cold now.

I don't know man, it's a tough call... You are a sharp cookie and I know you will make the right decision. I'm a mechanical person, if you are then the incedental repairs would be easy and cheap, if you dont wanna mess with it well.... If the price is right roll with it but remember your first decision is always the best, trust your instinct.

Hey Rover, my S-10 has 234,000 and still going. I would love a new/used truck but no way I can afford one. So my equipment is staying put and I'm gonna see just how many more miles I can get out of it. Keep her and lets see how many miles we can get outta our S-10's

Let me see - I used to own (when I was single) a Daihatsu Van - 2 cylinder 600cc motor) that had:-
1 x 2m FM (FT-212RH)
1 x 6m All Mode (FT-620)
1 x IC-701 & Freq Keypad
1 x RS Scanner (cant recall the number)
1 x Pearce Simpson Super Panther
1 x FRG-7 Receiver

All this in a car smaller than an 60s Mini.

Chad and all,

I am wavering back and forth :-( . First, I'm ready to trade, then NOT ready to trade. Then the gas prices are going shoot up again :-(. Back and forth, back and forth. I drove back home last night after looking at the other truck and thought, "ya know, ole "Chuck the Truck" ain't so bad" He's got a few "war wounds", but there's life in 'im yet. (It's hard to beat an old Chevrolet truck!) Then I keep seeing that shiny "new" truck (well, it would be new to me ;)


Chad, it doesn't bother me either way about the clutch. I have occasionally stomped the floor looking for the clutch in other cars (BOY! Is THAT ever an odd feeling to find no clutch there).
I've had both and each has its advantages. One thing about the clutch, I've had dead batteries and simply rolled off down the hill, and other times, well, I couldn't do that because it was an automatic. I've driven everything from a farm tractor, my old Model A Ford, school busses with the granny gear, to three-on-the-tree, to eighteen wheelers. I've gotten so used to it, I just go with the flow. My daughter absolutely refuses to drive my pickup (good thing?) because it is a stick. I just shift whatever I have to shift to get under way! LOL! The only time I don't like a stick is when you have to go for miles and miles, stoplight to stoplight, or in a traffic jam--stop 'n go, etc. Then it starts to wear on the old feets (yeah, plural--an old joke at home). I'm not getting any younger (late 50's) and some of my friends who swore they'd never drive anything but a stick back in the SS 396 days drive fullsized Mercury sedans now.

Tomorrow, I may start yanking out radios.

1 VHF amplifier
1 HF amplifier
Assorted Coaxes
Miscellaneous fuse blocks and power cables.
1 Double 00 power (welding) cable for the 600 Watt
HF amp.
1 pickup bed toolbox.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!
My stars, that's TOO much work!!

Hey Duck, My '89 S-10 only had 86,000 on it when I got about 5 years ago. As far as I know its the original engine, tranny and clutch. I put about $1000.00 in to it when I first got it to replace a cracked injector, full tune up, fuel pump and ignition control box. I haven't done a thing to it since except change oil, filters, brakes and put some tires on it.

I know them Toy's will put up with some abuse after I seen the stuff a friend of mine puts his through. I never thought my Chevy would let me get away with what I put it through, but it has so far....

hey rover my S10 just kicked the 200,000 last month and she still dont drip a drop of oil !
well not till the oil change then my aim is not so good ! LOL
me and the wife got a car i have been wanting for the last 5 years ! 89 Mustang ! man i love them cars ! too bad its only got the 2.3 for now ! the 302 will look better after i get her van going ! but looking back to changing radios over i would leave everything and start new with new wires ! and new coax and start over ! with all new just incase you mite have a bad spot in a hot wire of ground wire ! but i hope you get things working the way you want ! i just had to tell my little story about my dream car we just got !

rover, i can remove AND reinstall my cb, meter, amp, amp remote switch, coax, mag mount & antenna in LESS THEN 3 minutes-for auto maintenance, long term airport parking, etc. when i put the 6 meter radio mag mount & antenna in AS WELL, it only adds another minute or so of time. amp/radio wiring disconnects from battery in, what? another 2 minutes. have never had to add multiple ground wires, etc-just upgraded charge wires & whatever else was there, could remove & reinstall in another vehicle, but why bother, depreciated over 4-5 years, cost is nil.

if you PLAN the initial installation with change/upgrade/replacement in mind, things are easier later

It's also easier to yank OUT than to re-install!
;) There's also the matter of the remote head cables for my radios, too; they are TOO expensive to leave behind.

Amen on the welding cable! The last batch I bought for the new car has teflon between the copper and rubber, it is soooo easy to work with. But it's only 4Ga.

I like install work, it gives me time to go over the vehicle, relax and be to myself. Drawback is that big installs take some time so I'm stuck driving a vehicle that's missing interior panels for a few days :-)
