I've had a DX-959 since 2002. Had intermittant garbled audio, cold solder joints on power and antenna connections to the board, (among other places) clarifier is too high for channel and only goes up from there (ex. bottomed out at 27.365, only goes to 27.366 worthless for ssb) Lost a segment on the channel leds... now channel selector assembly loose in chassis...
This was a new radio in 2002 and been in a '99 Crown Vic, not a cement mixer or anything.
IS this common? I have a Classic 29LTD that seems like a much nicer radio with better audio. |

I have one, never had a problem with it, although clarifier isn't open, but have extended frequencies etc., no problems at all. Sorry to hear about your problems

I had one that I modded out as far as I could go. Took a beating too! Be sure the freq mod was wired up well. All those little plugs come out real easy and I lost some freqs because of it. Had to go in and redo it with a soldering gun. As far as the audio it was great on AM. SSB was not bad but it was never a great sidebander period. There are a few 959's that I have heard on SSB that was impressive for it being a Galaxy but I never expect too much ssb performance from a Galaxy anyway.

I just got one of the new 959's with the mosfet final and it's a very nice little radio. Tuned up to easily 30w pep (before volting final)and will swing full power from a 2w dead key. (Gotta love those mosfets) It's decent on ssb...in fact, if you don't go crazy with the alc adjustment, it has very smooth audio and once warm is very stable.

Never had quality problems here with the Galaxy DX959.
I have had several of them over the years and all have been GREAT performing radio's.
One DX-959 of mine has went from Ironmask/CEF#100 to 3 other CEF member's over the last few years and it is still working GREAT with NO problem's.
This is just my Own Personal experience with the Galaxy DX-959 radios and not 2nd hand RUMORS/HERESAY/GOSSIP! from someone who has never personally owned or used one.
It is a GOOD RADIO with a GOOD PRICE.

had two 33's, a 55, two 99V's, and a Saturn Turbo that had small and major problems, but never owned a DX-959...however...
if the voltage regulator breaks off the board because the mount knob screws are over-tightened then there is a big problem, no matter what radio it is...every time I ever got carried away with those knobs they stripped out Long before it flexed the chassis that far...so, this means it was a case of either poor assembly, or poor design...especially when BigC's radio is only a few months old
as far as galaxy's warranty and tech support...they are the same On Paper as the majority of radios out there...however, when I tried to get galaxy to honor warranties on two different radios, they always had an excuse not to do so (BigC said he had problems with that also)...
so, it's perfectly understandable why he has made his decision...radios are darn expensive nowadays, a person Has to make that decision after a bad experience and reading/listening to the however-many other bad and good experiences with a particular product...if not, he Could Be wasting a lot more money in the future

Mine was a dud off the shelf. Bad pots, frequencies were way off, and the LED channel number burned out. I like Galaxy radios but it seems they were having some QC problems for a bit. |

I've had solder problems and frequency drift on my 959 and 99. I've had them both in a Jeep and almost every off road trip I have to fix a solder joint somwhere.
usually it is the voltage regulator but I'm tightening the screws with a screwdriver and don't tighten them hardly at all.
I think that the constant bumping in the jeep is just too much for them. I'm trying out my old Cobra 29 now. Bummer because I really like the 959 as it's my favorite radio. |

if ya want/need a good cb for jeep for off roading the uniden 510 is a great choice.
the midland 1001z also is a little cheaper
and has rf gain.the 29 should be ok i just used
small radiosfor that kinda stuff

959 is a nice unit to use as a "base". I use a Uniden 520 in my Jeep...beat the heck out of it and never a problem...those things last forever!! |

Try one of the newer Galaxy DX 959 radios and I think you will find the quality to be better.
SSB is still not perfect as they still have some drift while warming up which seems to take about 15 minutes to settle down on frequency and then may not be dead center on frequency.
Everybody wants to be dead on frequency but this is why clarifiers are put on radios.
Love the big S meter and for all the bells and whistles,all around performance you get on this radio I think it is the best CB radio out there. |
