I see alot of post throughout the forum on Magnum Radios, but the question is are they really that much better than any other radio? How would they hold up in a dump truck? How do they perform on 11 meters after the conversion? I'm thinking about maybe a S3 80, as I only run AM while driving, Tommy~852~CEF 750

I own a Magnum (actually 2) S-3, they go into a dump truck all the time and have never failed me. Next is to get my new s-9. I own only Magnums! Kosmic CEF801 KI4TRX

my magnum 257 has been bouncing around on the front seat for nearly 2 months now with no ill affects. i know of at least 3 S9's in dump trucks for 1 year or more, and an older alpha force in a lifted 4wd truck that rides extremely hard. none of them have had any of the 'loose/cold solder joint' issues typical of exports(read:galaxy) of years gone by. |

As I remember it..Part of Lons torture test during his review is to tie radios into a PAINT SHAKER! DO I also recall placing then in an oven of some kind? If you see a review on a radio...and Lon did the review....I think it'll pass the dump truck test Hank~CEF559/CEFHAM242 KC2RIW Eastern Long Island NY

I've got one that HAS had cold solder joints. They are basically like any other radio on the market today, you'll get a bad one now and then. No they are not better than any other radio on the market, they are only talked up to be by the folks who "think" they are. They are a nice radio and work well, requiring NO tuning out of the box. And despite the idiots who say you can't run one with a two pill box you can. I've run all my S9's with all my two pills and no problems for years now. They aren't the best but aren't the worst either. Big Daddy |

The cber's who say that Magnums are the best are entitled to their opinions. They are one of the best rigs that sit on the top shelf along with the others that cost big bucks. Myself I prefer the Connex line of Ranger radios in which that I feel are the best. Can you believe that some think that Galaxy is the best?! .........................I'm sure you could run the 50 watt Magnum S-9 at full power with a 2 X 2879,2290 custom box with their copper/aluminum boards even with the mic gain near full. Custom boxes are made extra heavy duty. Without making internal adjustments reducing radio performance and fooling with mic gain it is not a good idea to drive your average commercial 2 pill amps with more than twice the input they need to perform. I find no sense in it at all. I would'nt even drive a commercial 2 pill amp with my Connex 4800 because the audio will be unacceptable and the heat produced is to much for what the amp is designed to handle. Many cber's think the more they put in the more they get out not realizing they are reducing performance dramatically. Sam Lewis is no idiot. He only built the radio so I would just take a wild guess thinking maybe he knows what he is talking about! Just my 2 cents on the matter.73 KEEP IT REAL! Personally i would NOT part with my 357 for anything. I have said it before and i'll say it again....what a great piece of kit!! The only weird thing is it is a bit like an Icom. It likes it's own microphone. The stock mics that come with them are the best to use with them. Much like the Icom's that use the HM12 or HM36. Apart from that....an absolute head fryer!!! Once i replace the Magnum mic...mine pulled the pin and refused to play...it will be put back into rotation with the Icom and the Madison as most used radios in the home base.
