Personal ~ Non - Technical Review.

Well I have had my Super Star 158EDX for a few months now. And I must say, I think it is one of the best radios I have ever owned/used.

I love the classic look, and the blue meter light, blue channel display, as well as the freq counter are very nice.

And they are very easy on eyes. This is nice, when you get old like me!

And I have made well over 65 contacts on the radio, and at times it was almost too easy! So let me hit the highlights!

PROs

The look is classic and nice.

The blue color in the freq, meter and channel display are easy on the eyes.

The built in echo is very nice. Smooth as silk. If you’re into echo, you’ll like this one a lot.

The talk-back works really well. And you can run it without the echo, so if you’re wiring up a mic, you can hear how it sounds without having to find someone to give you a radio check.

Speaking of mics, I have found the stock mic is one of the best sounding mics I have ever used.

I have heard my radio, and it sounds great. But I have had tons of folks tell me it sounds super. Not one person has ever asked me to try a power mic on it! And I did not turn up the modulation!

I am running it with factory settings the way it came to me.

And the Roger Beep is a nice sounding beep.

And yes, I do like beeps, but I don’t run one to often.

The NB button seems to work great on AM, but doesn’t do too much on SSB.
Not that you need it, SSB is nice a quite, unless the DX is in!

There is a 10Kc button as well.

The SWR is just a button, push in and your SWR is there to read on the meter. You can’t get it any easier then that!

The High/Low switch works great. This allows you 12 bands all together. 24.2650 – 29.6550.

Yes it covers 12, 11and 10 meters.

As for power, I was getting 35 watts out of the radio right out of the box. I did not tune the radio up, that is the way she came to me.
And the mod for expansion is pretty easy for the average radio guy.

And here is something kinda cool. The mounting bracket that comes with the radio has rubber grommets that save the side of the radio from
getting all torn up. A small thing, but a nice thing that adds to the already great value of this radio.

And last but not least, the price. You can not get a better buy on a radio then the Super Star 158EDX. You get at least 400 dollars worth of
radio for around 250 bucks! Easy math there.

CONs

Well, so far I haven’t found any.

Final Comments

In closing let say this. I am not the last word in radios, but I have had many radios in the last 20 years, and I would hold this radio up as one of the best I have ever owned.

The features, the look, performance and
price make it a bargain any day of the week. If you want a radio that allows you to cover all but the CEF 6 meter Nets, this radio is for you!

And let me state this: I did not get my radio from Copper.

Not that I could not have, as their price is the best on the Net. But I knew that some would
think I would be willing to lean to a more Copper friendly review.

And I haven’t gotten a thing from Coppers for this review. I reviewed this radio because I truly believe it is the BEST radio for the money on the market right now. And if you get one, and you should, I think you will agree with me! I hope to hear you in the DX, my SS-158EDX is ready and waiting!

Respectfully Submitted,

Mike

The only real problem I am finding is that it is about 1 1/2 kcs off freq till it warms up.Radio not made for the colder climates I guess!Once the car warms up its ok.Must be using sub standard caps etc in around the VCO and oscillators etc!Now my old TRC 451 was rock solid stable no matter what the temp.Other than that it seems to work fine for a 10/11 meter radio.Getting good reports with a Road Devil mic,now all I need is a good high drive amp(one that will take the full output from the radio)and hopefully a Z-180 to complete the mobile setup.
