Anyone know what wattage the newer Magnum 257 radios with the ERF-2030 finals put out on single sideband out of the box new and untuned in the 10 meter band?

kabar, when i bought mine last may, i did NOT choose to have copper align and expand mine, i did it myself. expansion was a breeze. initial tests found the wattage output extremely LOW. i opened it & adjusted ONLY the SSB power internally & it jumped to mid 50's on 27.385 & just about 50 on 28.360. i have never fully aligned it, or adjusted any other coils-just the power RV's. it made more then a handful of skip contacts from the base with ease. i then put it in my truck & use it ONLY mobile ONLY for 10 meters & it has made EVERY single contact i have attempted with no amplifier!

Thank you Tech 808 and Patzerozero.
Have either of you checked with a receiving station to verify if the newer Magnum 257`s transmit on frequency single sideband dead center or if not how many cycles off plus or minus dead center since it has a locked clarifier.

it's real close, freq set to 28.360 USB, the clarifier center turned maybe where you'd find '11:58' as compared to '12 o'clock'-it is THATCLOSE to dead on out of the box. that is to tune to an ic706mkIIg that was aligned & tested, which will show 28.359.96 or closer. rcv & xmit of the 257 seem to be in agreement with each other. for me personally, it could never be my 'only' radio, that aside, it IS an AMAZING little radio!

I think that the clarifier on the Magnum 257`s are locked.
Turning the clarifier knob only moves the receive frequency and the transmit is locked.
A good reason to consider a HF rig such as Icom,Kenwood or Yaesu where you change the transmit frequency with the VCO by the tuning knob for single sideband work.
Also most of these radios are rated at 100 watts on single sideband right out of the box.

Kabar:
I have one of the older 257's, the 30 watt version, and the clairifier tracks both transmit and receive.

Is this rig not sold by copper anymore, or am I just missing it in the selection?

Thanks..

We removed the Magnum 257 from the website because RFLimited hasn't been able to supply them for quite some time. As soon as they are available again you can be sure we will stock them and put them back up on our website. We felt it was unfair to our customers to continue taking orders for them when we had no idea when we would be able to ship them.

I recently purchased a Magnum 257 and have been using it for the last week, I consistently get good signal and audio reports (after turning up the pot inside the mic). The noise blanker works great in SSB mode and pretty good in AM mode. The conversion to open up the frequency range was too easy ( I like to use my soldering iron once in a while, didn't need it this time). I am very happy with the radio and highly recommend it.

Does the 257 show just freq. counter or is it able to show channel #'s? I am looking at one to put in my wife's car and it would be easier for her if it show's channel #'s.

I have owned the 257 now for accouple years. I have received very good audio reports on this radio on am and ssb. I finally opened up the mic and turned it up to about 90%. Everyone thought I had purchased a new radio or as they said, "did you get a big radio". Apparently this makes a good deal of difference.

I just purchased my third 257 from Coppers. This is the first one with 50 watts for me. This is the best one yet. Out of the box all I did was the conversion and it does 45-50 watts pep and 100% modulation. The receive is very quiet. The radio came with a different(larger) mic. It still has the ajustment inside. The channel up-down buttons are on the face of the mic which can get bumped accidently sometimes. This radio has all kinds of audio with the stock mic, no power mic needed. One thing that is confusing is it states on the radio that it was made in the Phillipenes and I thought they were now made in China. Great Radio!

I have used my "Cool Blue" Magnum 257 for a long time. Bought one soon after the new blue ones came out. I had it in a couple different minivans with a KW7, 7ft Fire Stik antenna with always great compliments on how it sounded. The last van I bought I put a 2510 in that simply because I had it on the shelf and had not used it in a few years. While the 2510's are great radios mine had developed a problem with a weak distorted audio. About this time I found a truck. I had been looking for a full size Chevy Tahoe 2dr. I finally found one I liked and bought that. I installed the 257 also a Icom 2720 and a BCT7 scanner. The 257 still works as good as when I bought it. Another post said something about it being rock solid on freq. I have found this to be exactly true. What ever I set it on, it stays right there. NO drift at all. OH FYI the clarifier on mine tracks both TX and RX. One more thing, unlike a lot of "10 Meter" radios out there, this 257 has the TX and RX exactly on the same freq. I hear so may radios out there with the RX and TX not aligned together and it makes it irritating trying to talk on SSB.
Anyway after several years I am still very happy with the Cool Blue 257. Its still making contacts for me and I am still getting compliments on the clear clean loud audio it has. For the $.$$ it is very hard to beat this rig. Don't let the small size fool you they work very well. The display is easy to read even for my aging eyes. Even in the bright sunlight I can still read it just fine.
Right after I bought it I contacted Magnum asking for some service manual information. They not only send me the information I asked for but included a Magnum Radio cap as well. I have to rate their service as top shelf.
Anyway I have my 2510 going to the local radio tech and if it is not repairable I intend to order another 257 for the house.

MAGNUM 257
I presume after reading the comments, the mic is bigger than the older ones.

Also on the power cord is it the same as for the other radio's 3 pin or different.

I have the new Blue display 257 with the Mosfet finals. The clarifier, like the other 257s I have owned tracks on both receive and transmit on LSB/USB/AM/FM.I have tested this using a hand held 6 digit freqency counter. The power output on mine is 45 watts peak on AM and sideband according to my MFJ 948 using a dummy load.

Two things I would like to see changed on this rig: A real 6 digit freq. counter instead of the 5 digit freq. "display" and position marks on the control knobs instead of those indentations on the tops of the knobs. ( Have trouble seeing their position while driving). Other than that, great little rig! 73 CEF 254

Well that's a shame. What is it about an unlocked clarifier that is so great. Personaly I don't like it and it should be an option. Can you not move between freq's like the 2510 or the 2950 using a cursor?

The new 257 is great, the clairifier does track both rx and tx. The best thing is the new full size radio powered "power mic" with up/down buttons. Loud and clear.
