I aquired a slightly used TR696F SSB CB base radio from a guy who had tried to do a few mods on it and quit before finishing the job.I paid about $185.00 for it and it is about 2 months old. Following the Tips and Tricks video for my mobile TR699WX I completed the channel and clarifier mods.I then did a further mod on the clarifier to give it a little more than 10KHZ slide.I did a mod and power adjustment per the video and it really talks! I love the quality of the sound and receive and have gotten nothing but great signal reports both while dxing and during local contacts. The main board is just like the TR696 mobile series with a add on weather channel board off to the right side of it.There is a lot of extra room inside.I love RCI products having owned several different models and reccomend this fine base station to anyone who wants a good performing base with all the features anyone could want! |

The Silver Salute (Base Mic) and DM-452 (Hand Mic) also work very well with the 696F SSB Base as well as many other Microphones. The Texas Ranger 696F SSB Base is just a very good reasonably priced radio with very good performance Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Bluegrass, If a person is on a tight budget or even if they are not, they can get the DM-452 @ $17.95 4-Pin http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodE01-06012+ 5-Pin http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodE01-06013+ Maybe out of 600 or more people that we have recommended this mic to in the last several years since it first came out and who have used them I only know of 1 person who did not like it and returned one to me. Great Mic, Great Performance & Great Reasonable Price. Just Our personal experience with using them and about every single hand mic ever made over the years by anyone. And they SOUND GREAT and work Very Well on the Texas Star 696F SSB Base Radio. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN & Shirley 1st Sargant CEF164

i just got my 696f-ssb modified for more power and extra channels if you get the extra channels on your radio i want to warn you that the channels act kinda squirly there not in a row like the regular cb channels so you'll have a little trouble finding a specific frequency. |

Is there anything different you can do on the extra channels being squirly. What kind of wattage did you get when peaked and tuned and are you completly satisfied with your 696f-ssb Bluegrass? |

as with any CB modded for freqs, only certain freqs can be obtained from the pll circuitry. they come in a logical order for the IC, but unfortunately not for the CBer. they're only 'squirrely' because they're not in that logical order, not that there's a problem. a freq counter helps, especially when using an unlocked clarifier on SSB, though it's not absolutely neccessary. just a little card telling you where you are when you flip those switches. expo kits work well & are fairly easy to install without test equipt, but only in AM radios like 25/66/68, 29/76/78. a nuisance to set up in SSB radios without proper test gear. |

Bluegrass, You have me totally confused on this one about the Freq Counter. On My Texas Ranger 696F SSB Base I have done the Channel Modification and with the "BUILT IN FREQUENCY DISPLAY" already in the radio I have NO PROBLEMS finding the frequency I want to use. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Why wouldn't you buy a RCI-2980 and not have to make any channel modifications and also peak out more power, I'm just asking? I have a 696 base ordered.... |

$150 price difference could be prohibitive, doing this since the '70's & i still have people buy something because they have no intention of getting to far into it,then the bug bites 'em & they want more! also, in theory at least, a real cb made for 40 channels, even when expanded, doesn't need to be as broadbanded as one that covers 320 channels & can concentrate it's xmit & rcv better into the smaller bandwidth. (my freq counter comment, lon, was on any modded cb in general, not specifically 1 with a built in counter, maybe that's what bluegrass meant, too?) |

When in the weather mode with the set on, is it suppose to show the weather frequencies in the frequency display. A red led lights to indicate weather but no frequency showing. Is this correct? Do you have a manual available to send out? Would the manual explain the frequency display? Also is the radio adjustment pots the same as the Galaxy DX 2547? Thanks Ron |
