MAGNUM S-9-80 NITRO

My Personal Owners Review By:

Below is My Personal Owners Review of my MAGNUM S-9-80 NITRO Radio that I purchased from Copper Electronics that arrived on June 9th, 2009.

REVIEW:

First of all I am not a tech, neither do U try to be. This is my opinion on the Magnum S-9-80 Nitro.

Ok, I run the radio as a base station with a PS-26KX power supply, Astatic 600 SWR/Power meter, home brew Antenna Tuner & a homebrew Antenna Tuner & a homebrew 5/8 wave Verticial gain antenna, with 100' of RG8 mini foam coax.

Oh yea and the STOCK Microphone that does not need a power mic!

Ok down to business:

TX

Does the radio do the advertised 75+ watts? YES! the radio will dead key a 2 watts and swing to about 80 watts on AM with the Top Gun ON.

With the Top Gun OFF it will swing to about 45 watts.

At 80 watts it drains / pulls about 10 amps.

All of the locals said / thought that I was using an amp as I gained 2 to 4 S-units in my signal of about 20 miles.

The audio is real clear and loud, SSB is unbelevably LOUD and STRONG and the radio does not drift at all and is really stable overall.

It has a heatsink on tha back that I think is a little small for a 4 final radio as it get's real hot after TXing for awhile.

Maybe a larger heatsink like the one on the 175 watt radio has with the Align & Tune with the Align, Tune, Channel mod.

Expanded Frequency Coverage after the option: Expand, Align, Tune is: 25.615 ~ 29.215

RX

The recieve on this radio really imprssed me as it is so clear and static free with the new NB in this radio.

Option's

Where to start?

Echo? Yes +

I do not use Echo ofton buit it is there and it is Digita Echo.

Roger Beep? Yes +

Dimmer Control? Yes +++ good for Mobile use.

Fine & Coarse Clarifier? Yes,+++ I love as it help's tune in to a station with ease.

10khz? Yes, BIG PLUS! ++++

Digital Frequency Counter? Yes,+++

Top Gun Modulator? Yes ++++

SWR Alert? Yes! with a flashing Signal Meter light, different but it works.

* There is a slider switch on the back so you can turn the NITRO knobs Off or On.

With the Blue S-meter, counter & channel readout, and those blue control knobs, well well they are suppossed to be all blue, the radio lights up so COOL!

Each control knob has 3 small LED's, 3 of my knobs has 1 Blue & 2 Green so they look Teal green. So far that is my only complaint with the radio.

I CALLED SAM LEWIS AND THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED IN 2 MINS. There is a small cap inline to lower the voltage to dim them and when that is done they change colour. Just cut 1 end of the cap and FIXED.

They even through in an extra face plate. 2 yes 2 mic jacks, one on each side for comparing different mics.

When I decided to get a radio I was looking for a little more power, a larger meter, NOT LIGHTS, quiet receive, counter and of course SSB. So far after all is said and done I am Very Pleased and Surprised with the radio, for the money it's a sure hit. $30.00 for Align & Tune from Copper you can't go wrong.

I would Recommend this radio to anyone and you would not be disappointed!

If you should have any Questions please feel free to ask / post and I will be happy to try and answer them for you!

PS: If you live in Canada dont ship it UPS unless you want to get hit high with brolerage fees. Thats another story.

And please check out my picture's I have posted here in the: Member's Pictures area located here in the Copper Electronics Forum.

Respectfully Submitted,
