How will this set up work. The Texas Star has "variable" for power. My 257 has a low dead key of 1.7 watts. I was wanting to know what the Texas Star Amp will do say with the variable all the way down, half way up and all the way turned up. Thank you for your input to this question in advance, I appreciate your knowledge on this.

for longevity, leave the variable on the AMP all the way UP, and adjust the RADIO for amps output. turn mic gain & power on RADIO all the way DOWN, key mic on AM, adjust power on radio til dx350 dead keys 60-75 watts, note where the variable on radio is.....do same turning radio variable power down til amp dead keys watts you may want-30, 20, 10, 2....etc. at each output, turn mic gain UP & adjust for 'swing' on peak meter, max of 250-275-or whatever it goes to, just NOT HIGHER then 275, then turn mic gain down for other outputs, 200, 150, 100, etc. SOMETIMES, the audio goes all cruddy when you turn the drive into the amp down too far, just experiment. for SSB, do the same with mic gain, jsut leave radios power on LOW. again, don't go over 250-275 PEP, you may find SSB has a bit less 'swing' then AM, nothing you can do about it. especially if you have the blue mosfet version 257, you may find mic gain settings to be a bit more critical with low drive dx350(even if labeled high drive). one of the caveats of using a low drive amp with a radio that is intended to have high output.

I have also done the mic "pot" modification to this radio, or microphone.

Well Patzero, what would be a good amp to use with this 257. It is the blue faced 257. I also have this on a switch with a Uniden Washington.

texas star dx500. should be able to use it with radio 'cranked'. i always test slowly though. do as above basing it on about 500 watts PEP & 125 carrier as 'max'.
