Hello all,

Here is my 2 cents about the 980 in a nut shell, the first chance I get it will belong to somebody else. I bought this radio the sunday after thanksgiving 09. Upon arrival, approx. december 5, it would not modulate after about 3 key ups. Called Sam and sent it in for repair. Because of the holiday season, I didn't receive the radio back till January 8th and was told it was a connection problem on the echo board. I hooked it up again and what do you know same problem only you could talk for about 10 minutes this time. Leave it alone for a bit and you could go a little while again. I figured this would give time at least to test the rest of the radio. Upon testing I discovered that SSB sounded horrible on both TX and RX, kind of makes everyone including TX sound alien like. So once again it was off for repair. This time I contacted Chris the repair man and explained all of the issues myself. I asked him to really test the radio. Got the radio back February 17. Told this time that the echo board was replaced. Upon hook up I made note that it was still on the same channel, our local channel, that it was when I sent it in. Guess what, SSB still horrible. This radio was hardly looked at. However the modulation problem is fixed. So after this I decided I would check into returning the radio. YEAH RIGHT!!!! Now its the blame game. Copper says its magnums issue, and of course magnum says its coppers issue. So in short I payed for a SSB radio because I wanted to talk SSB and all I have is a really expensive AM radio. I bought magnum because I had been running an S-6 for 4 years and was really happy with that radio, but after the 980 and poor customer service I don't think I will waste anymore money on Magnum radios. Its not just one radio that I'm basing that decision on either. Multiple co-workers have magnum radios as well and all but my S-6 have had problems. It is such a shame too because the magnum is one of the best sounding radios, in my opinion, on the market. But all in all just not worth the headache.

My apologies to the moderators if this should have been posted under reviews.

Thanks for reading,

Jerry
