I own both these radios and use them at home as a base. They share Maco antenna switch and a Antron 99 with ground plane kit. The Ranger was bought used and has not been modified and the factory sticker is in place so this radio to my knowledge has never been opened up. My Galxay DX959 was bought new from Coppers and had there peak and tune. My question is how come my ranger hears and SOO MUCH BETTER ON SSB THAN MY Galxay DX959? There is no comparison! The Texas Ranger TR696FD1 hears all over the USA! All opinions are welcome for the Ranger or Galaxy.
Thanks in Advance.

i know i have a TR696FD1 and it does really shine on SSB, i compair it to my 2950's and cobra 148's on ssb. on am it has a little more white noise then i like but i talk 99% SSb anyway another thing thats great about them you can add a bunch of freq's as well as ad add a 10KC slide and unlock the clarifier with the 6 diget freq counter. these radios are a beast on the free bands with capabilities of running channels like 27.5700 but yes they surely shine on SSB. i used the tone & dim for my extra channels and the ch19 button for the 10kc slide and unlocked the clarifier.

Hello Radioeddz.
Thanks for your reponse and all the info on mods to the TR696FD1. This gives me a lot more to study on my new found toy the TR696FD1. The mods you mention I could not do myself but I am always welcome to know who can.

Thanks,

MarylandCrab

Hiya Fieldrat.

I love my Galaxy DX959 for AM only at this point because it a big talker on AM. I still cant believe the SSB recieve on my TR696FD1. I have enough Cobras around here without SSB and love those too. Looks like I will end up with more radios than I need. Right now my go to unit is the stock TR696FD1.

Thanks for your help.

Waving a hand at ya in Maryland
