Well I helped a friend out on testing antennas which is the best for his truck.
We used the monkeymade mm9 and the mr coiley antenna.
The equipment tested with these was the magnum s9 175 with both antennas then the texasstar 1200 inline with the radio and the performance was pretty much the same with both antennas.
Did the same testing but switched out to the rci 2970n2 with the antennas then added the amp in line, and far as the receive and transmit reports still pretty much the same, so with that testing being done, unless someone else has tried and got different results, I can not justify in the pricing of the Mr. Coiley antennas at $130-$150 compared to the monkeymades $100 or less and they both give the same performance and both rated the same amount of power handling. Has anyone else done any testing and had different results, if so please post what you used and tested..

Good article..
Just helped a friend out today, I mounted a ball mount on the passenger side rear quarter panel under the side back glass of his Jeep Liberty to use with his monkey made antenna and turned out great with swr 1:1.
However when planning a install like this, plan on making a half day of it, to make sure everything is done correctly and coax run hidden up to the front console.
Played with several antennas on the mount, was a lot of fun.
After a day of fun, another happy dx'er with his monkey made and s9 magnum to keep the skip world rolling!!! |

Keep in mind...
On the Jeep Liberty, that passenger side rear quarter panel is where some electronics are located that communicate with the vehicle systems computer. I believe the fuel pump control may be there also. Too much RF at the wrong frequency will cause havoc at the wrong time.
As for how know? Let's just say that APRS and Jeeps don't always mix. At least fellow hams could tell where it was stranded.

I wanted to put it on the other side, but it was insisted they wanted it there, so that's where it went. I even told them the same thing you mentioned, but guess have to live and learn the hard way. Hopefully he will be alright and not have any issues. |

well i have/use a monkey made mm9
and love it. on that install i would
think the roof would been better than either side cause half if not more than half of the
antenna blocked.on my mini van mines is about 6 inches from the rear
@tech 833 ive read your reviews nice work btw.
one thing i didntr see maybe i missed it but
i know the monkeymade is a heavy antenna
was curious if the k40 coil antenna was as heavy
as it seemed to be very close in performance to
the monkey made.

The K40 is almost as tough as the Monkey Made. Not quite, but really, really close.
I'll say this- The Monkey Made is the toughest mobile antenna I have ever had in my hands.
I am not talking about on-air performance here, I am only talking about brute toughness.
The K40 is clearly not made in the USA, but even for a Chinese antenna, it is really tough. Still, if you want a Monkey Made alternative, the K40 would make an excellent choice.

ive had a few of the BIG coil antennas and always went back to the whip ! cant go wrong with what works the best ! LOL

Yes, if you have the veritcal clearance, than the full-length 1/4 wave is obviously the way to go.
For those who do not have the clearance (like a big rig), then you need to seek a shorter alternative. The big coil antennas mentioned are really tough, and should last a long time.
If cost is a concern, you cannot go wrong with a fiberglass antenna like the Copper Night Sticks.
