What is the max the JB 12 will do and is it useable on SSB? Would it make a good driver for another amp like a D&A mav 250? Several guy told me that back in the 1970s they used to use a JB 12 behind their brownings because the brownings didnt doo much swing on AM for driving an amp to max and used the 12 as a driver for a bigger amp like a D&A mav 250 or a phantom 500.

the tubes will not last in the maverick if you drive it the 4 small tubes are the drivers and you will end up with a bad keying circut to. i think the jb12 does good by its self it is a good little amp.just use it to talk local. it would effect the phantom the same way. it already has drivers in it

They call them power modulators, that little 6bq5 was a screamer's too. Used mine on a jb 2000 6 meter amp mod'd for 11 meters.

The Blackcat JB-12 was from around 1975 or so.

It was listed as a Base Modulator with 25-40 watts.

Some people got more power out of them depending on drive but 30 watts is in the ball park for power.

I have a chance to buy a Black Cat amp and it sounds alot like the JB 12. The one I found is a two piece set, a power supply and the amp. The amp has two tubes in it and you can tune the input and output. On the bench I saw it do 250 watts. Does this sound like the JB 12?

Okay, I ended up buying the amp that I described earlier. It is a Black Cat JB 76B, although I was told that it is sometimes called a JB 200.

Anyone know which model came with an internal power supply and two tubes (one smaller than the other). I'm thinking it may be a 150?

Here's a page from my Blackcat booklet from about 1978.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Familystuff/JB12JB150.jpg

The JB12 has a 6BQ5 final with a 6AQ5 keyer.

The JB150 has a 8417 final with a 6AQ5 keyer. You may have to look and see what tubes your's has.

I guess your's has two tubes, a keyer and final so it's a JB 150A-RB. That booklet I have is from 1976, it shows all their products for that year, a price list and other information but no schematics.
I've got a little 4 page operating instructions booklet that came with the 1977 model JB 12B-RB and the JB 150B-RB. The "B" model had the transistor keyer. The RB was for receive boost, that's how they sold them. They wouldn't transmit untill you changed the wiring on the relays. These instructions show how to wire them like the older model. These instructions do have a schematic for the 12B-RB and 150B-RB. If you need them I can email a scanned copy. scrapiron
