With the top cover off, front of radio facing you. About 3/4 the way back and just left of center, there are 2 pots. 1 marked AM and one marked SSB. (simple enough?:))On AM, I would set it to where the dead key is 1/4-1/5th of peak. Example: if it peaks at 400, set dead key around 80-100 watts. On SSB: with amp on high and a slightly louder than normal "AHHHH", set it to peak output then back it off about 10%.Example: if peaks at 400w, back it off till your peak is around 360w. This will keep you from overdriving the amp, give you a nice clean output & no one will ever notice the other 40 watts on the recieve end.:)

396,I run a t/s 400 v also.I set my radio so the meter on the front of the amp is on 5 or center straight up.The amp is clean and gets out good. Thus your not over driving the amp.My swr's are flat on the low side and 1.4 on the high side I dont worry about the wattage as long as my swr's are low and im booming.I love this amp and hope this helps you.Oh i also grounded the amp to the chasis as close to the amp as possible,It was grounded to the battery first, but when i shortend the ground i gained on my swing.Hope this helps.Yote coyote. From Iowa

Yea I know the feeling Joe....I used to run dogs. I hunted with the Mcarty bunch for a while. Mainly hunted with Brian Moore and that bunch north of Corydon. Sold all my dogs and tracking unit to Roger Carpenter when I moved....I still deer hunt though...Ill never give that up

A Texas Star 400 will handle 30-45 watts of SSB swing no problem.
