I had an eagle sidewinder and it was an Ok radio. I replaced it with a magnum 257 which is a much better radio with similar appearence to the sidewinder. The magnum has a much higher output PA section, it will give you 30 watts on sideband and fm. And about a 10 watt deadkey with swing to 20 watts rms on AM. I havent checked it on a peakreading meter yet. Unfortunatly the sidewinder does not cover the "A channels". The magnum covers the A channels and can also adjust in either 1,10 or 100khz steps. The rig just covers the 10/11 meter spectrum better than the Eagle. Both The eagle and the magnum share the same chassis and look almost dead alike. The differences are that the magnum has a black face plate instead of a dark grey one, and It has a large heatsink in the back to accomidate for the heat generated by the higher power output. I forgot to mention that the magnum also Has the repeater shift fuction for operators that are licensed for ten meters. Also go and check out the Htx-10 ten meter ham transiever made for radio crap. It is the same rig as the magnum 257 but it is unmodifiable to go outside of the ham band. Made by the same company that makes the 257 but radioshcack wanted a different cpu in their version so it couldnt go to 11 meters.
The following radios all share the same chassis and might possibly be manufacture at the same place:
Magnum 257, eagle sidewinder400, trc-485, htx-10, The titan, Albreight 485 (version sold overseas) and the superstar 4900+(not to be confused with the 4900b which is a base.

Note: The sidewinder has RX & TX on A channels by using the 5hz up or down and turning the clarifier all the way the same direction.

The only thing the sidewinder and magnum 257 share is the size of the box......

Everything else is diff.

The general overall positioning of buttons make it look extremely similiar in appearance. But the buttons are for diff functions on each radio.

Nothing bad being said about the sidewinder at all here..... single final vs dual final.

You just can't compare the two.......they are totally diff radios......

I now own the magnum 257

Just get the specs for each radio and compare features........then get the one you like....

The Eagle Sidewinder is a single final Radio and the magnum 257 is a dual final radio that is the difference. Sidewinder does 15 -18 Watts PEP where a Magnum 257 will do 30+ watt PEP.

I have recently purchased the Eagle Sidewinder 400. I have checked the modification pages and tried to look at the modifications with this radio. The following was suggested.

) Remove covers.
2) Locate a small PC board on the right side near the front.
3) There is a set of pins with a jumper over pin 1 & 2.
4) Remove this jumper and place it on pins 3 and 4.
5) Close up the radio and turn it on.

I can locate the PC Board on the Right side near the front. But there is now way I can ID the pins or Jumpers.

Has anyone ID the problem?

The following taken from previous posts: On the Sidewinder , Looking down into the radio , there is a small circuit board on the right side faceing you. Towards the REAR RIGHT SIDE of the small board are three holes that once had a small connector header. I believe you short the two pins closest to the rear of the small board. This should do it.

Look around on the backside (solder side) of the front circuit board (the one with the buttons) for an obviously ::out of place:: diode. It is obvious because all the rest of the components are surface mount. The diode will be sticking up. Cut it. Then try the keystroke entries to get into 11m. No guarantee, but this is a mod that worked for a Eagle clone radio, when all the mods pointed towards jumpers, and I couldn't find them.
You may have revision "C". Remove the small board and see if there is a jumper down around those holes , If so remove it.

RV1 RF Power Meter adjust
RV2 Squelch Level adjust
RV4 AM Carrier adjust
RV5 Modulation adjust
RV7 Modulation Meter adjust
RV11 13.8 Volt
RV12 S-Meter Adjust Both AM and SSB.
RV14 SSB ALC adjustment.
RV50 Clarifer Center adjust

Just back down RV4 to where you want it. You may have to de-tune the final tank a little to get it down that far. I tried one off the shelf and it did go down to 1 watt dead key with just RV4.

Audio limiter

Remove small transistor under fm board next to diode
D24.

I ALSO GOT THE SIDEWINDER AND CONVERTED IT .IT HAS 10 BANDS.ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TURN THE SMALL CIRCUT BOARD OVER SO YOU CAN SEE THE CIRCUIT AREA MARKED CONT 1.MY RADIO DID NOT HAVE THE BLACK JUMPER ON 1 AND 2 IT WAS JUST SOLDERED TOGETHER .IF YOU LOOK CLOSE YOU CAN SEE HOLE NUMBER 3.JUMPER THE SOLDER TO 2 AND 3 AND YOU ARE READY TO TALK.USE THE BLANK BUTTON TO CHANGE BANDS.THIS IS THE ONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE WRITING ON IT.

For the Modifications for the Eagle Sidewinder and the Tomahawk go to the link below.

When you get to the site go to MODIFICATIONS pages.

It will give you the information you need as there is a small difference in the Modification's on these two radios.

http://www.radiomods.co.nz/framescbsite.html

Hope this helps.
