uhhh

no

2SC2290 -- 70 Watts -- 87.5 MAX
2SC2879 -- 100 Watts -- 125 MAX
SD1446 -- 70 Watts -- 87.5 MAX
MRF455 -- 60 Watts -- 75 MAX

so, maybe 350 max

87.5 x 4 = 350

no,depends on the configureation of the amp,i know 3 people that has them and 550 to 600.did you check the voltage to the 4-sd1446? more voltage more watts.you cant just go by the wattage of the pills.

My HB 10 meter amp uses 4 SD1446's and on FM 29.6 it puts out just over 300 watts with my Titan -485 as a driver it is a tuned amp not very wide and is filtered but the output even on 28.4 SSB is fairly flat i aggree Taz 350 is realistic.

I beg to differ, but i had one of those amps and mine ONLY did MAX 325 watts. On SSB it did about 375 to 400 MAX and that was pushing it a tad bit. They are a OK amp but not something id pay a lot of $$ to have...
If you want a sceamer of a bass amp save the $$ and get an X force...

yeah, but remember bruce on 29.5 it will do less.diffrent frequencys you will get diffrent wattage.looks like it is time for another tech to step in.plus he is probably talking about bird watts.i am talking about peak.plus i have 3 freinds and they each got one and they all show 500 to 600 swing.cant be 3 bogus meters.boomer 500 in alot different is wide banded and not filtered.bruces amp is desighned to be a very clean operateing amp unlike the boomer.

My cousin had a boomer 500 and was driving it with a galaxy 99. He had a dosey meter hooked up to it and it would swing about 350-375, maybe as far as 400, but he would always mess around with it to see how much power he could swing by raising the power on the 99. I saw this with my own eyes, that meter read anywhere from 700-900 watts. He was really driving the $!*&# out of it though. His modulation would drop to nill. He totaly abused that thing like it was a tonka toy. So to answer your question psycoradio, the amp is real tough. It is still running to this day on the same finals and that was about 4 years ago that this all took place.

Thanks there BIGED. And Jyd. I have a chance to pick up one of these things. How about those Klv amps? Looks like I have a place to get a couple of those babies pretty cheap. Im thinking KLV1000 and maybe KLV550. The 1000 has tubes. Whats up with these? Thanks

Hmm, those wattage rating for those pills were given to me by 181.

Biged, I am sorry but those transistors are in no way going to do 700-900 watts. No way, the powersupply in that amp cant do it. Even if you put a bigger one in those pills would pop at at the voltage required to do 700-900 watts.

Now if it did do that wattage then his meter must be a little on the forgiving side.

Anyone else have any opinions?

jyd not having a boomer although i know it uses simular outputs why would it be dirty? Now my amp did not need to go below 28.4 without falling off fast and the output is filtered in the box so harmonics dont show on the watt metter as much either but when i bought all the parts i knew the transisters were good for 70 watts each. How do you get 500 watts unless its loaded with junk?

diffrent voltage, makes diffrent wattage.what i was tryng to say is.your amps output is probably cleaner than the boomer.i went up to 28.311 and my amp would not do the same? maverick 250 4 12jt6a's driveing 4 24lq6's dual power.307 or 181 probably had a boomer 500.they just wont ansure me,there probably laughing at us for argueing over this.why does everyone only go by pill watts instead of seeing what the voltage is that is supplying these pills.you tell me how a klv 550 does what it does.it does over the pills wattage. cause there on 28 volts.and for the guy out there ,the klv 1000 i watched it out of the box do 1300watts am 1400watt ssb.bruce why do dave made amps do so much 1-2290 driveing 4 2879's do 1000 to 1200 bird watts cause the voltage is about 18 or 20 volts.you have to concider all,not just 1-sd-1446=70wattscause there are more factors than that.i am not a tech i dont know as much as bruce,307 181 0r 671.but im not dumb.iam not going to say anymore about it cause i believe what i believe.i seen it at 3 diffrent people house,3 diffrent meters read the same.now someone is trying to make me feel bumb.i quit

and one last message on this subject.all the above are rated at 75% 3watt deadkey.so go figure at 100%,then calculate the drive you put inthe amp,and the voltage.so 70 watts eack at 75% and the drive from your radio and the voltage going to the pills.copper rates the amp at 450watts low drive.

jyd your not dumb at all your logic is very sound and more voltage would be more watts at 28 volts asuming you could get that high logic tells you my amp would crank 600 watts but even with a large heat sink i had to mount a fan blowing on it...REMEMBER I RUN FM NOT SSB... so 300 out is 100% of transmitt time still on a anilizer it dont look too bad... JYD i did not question your numbers at all just what the output would look like but if i can get 300 on FM 500 SSB would not be inpossable

The following is the highest levels tested from a quad of 1446 transistors:
(4) 1446 transistors configured in a class C amplifier with had wound transformers and finely tuned input and output, driven with 20w rms output 260w rms @ 15v. Any increase in drive causes failure. With 25w pep drive the pep output is 525w. Additional voltage such as 18v can increase the output pep by as much as 50%, but heat increase is dramatic as well as sensitivity to reflected power. Power measurements made into a 50 ohm DL and a Bird 43 and 43p.
Many factors can cause erroneous readings to be seen on several similar meters. Try taking your measurements into a 50 ohm DL.

its all good bruce,we all think diffrently.671 ansured my question.thanks, through a 50ohm dummy load, the amp measured 480watts with the boomer 500.bruce ham operaters usually use some clean nice equipment.i just ment that your amp probably has less distortion comparded to the boomer.like a clipped radio.the boomer does not sound as good as his tube amp.as in clairity.the boomer like most amps send out alot of negitive peaks.does that sound right? depends on how you drive it and what radio you drive it with.am i on the right road .if your amp was 11 meter and you hit it with 25watts you would get more out of the amp.but i still like to here what you think dont quit posting here yet

Yeah I thought that 900 watts was a little far fetched. Back then I didnt know any better. He showed this to me on a meter and I just ran with it. From what I can remember, it was a chincy little meter he was using. Even so, as much as abused that thing, it still held up to the punishment...Eddie

Hey guys! I've been running 5 pills for about 10 years now I've ran superstar, boomer, and now I am currently running a armadillo custom. The boomer was doing 500 it was stock. the superstar had the transistors changed out (1 2290 driving 4 2879 and a bigger power supply) we bult this one for compitition. running 100 amp alt and adding its own battery it would do 1200 on a bulldog meter and a solarcon thunderbolt antenna.

biged, the reason that amp showed 700-900w is because the amp was going into parasitic oscillation caused by the extremely high drive level. these amps are notorious for that.

these amps -are- capable of 375-425wpep output without becoming -too- dirty. but they will usually show 450-550 on a dosey or paradynamics/astatic due to the harmonic content and other trash when driven too hard.

I guess my readings on my meter(325 to 375 or so pep) were no too far out of line and i own a Dosy!
BTW Taz what the HE-double hockey sticks is a tetrode-whatever amp????? Never heard of such a thing but then again i dont know everything about amps either!

a tetrode IS a tube the closes thing to one is a dulegate mosfet what your showing is external anode tubes like a 4cx250 i ran 2 push pull on 2 meters on ssb good for 600 watts out

You're forgeting, these (1446) will put out slightly more at 27mHz(90 watts) than at 50mHz(70 watts) according to rfparts. And all similar transistors will give similar results.
