I have a Cobra 29WXST in my Bronco. I just bought a Silver Streak 150 watt amp. I haven't installed it yet. I was just wondering if there was any tricks that I should know about before I install the amp. Radio or amp mods? I am new at this. Thanks in advance. BlazingGuns |

You should get your radio carrier adjusted to 1w-1.5w. Supply the amp with at least 10ga wire direct to battery with a 20a fuse inline at the battery, make sure your swr is low and the antenna will handle at least 300w. |

Sorry, but, is the radio carrier the radio? Can I figure out what the wattage is with a multimeter? A big 10-4 on the 10ga wire and 20a fuse. I'll be sure to do that. I currently have a K40 antennae and getting great swr. 1.7 average on swr. Will the K40 handle the 150 watt amp? Thanks for all the help. |

yes it will, and he means dead key with out talking needs to be at least 1 1/2 watt or 2 watts, if you have a big dead key like 4 watts the amp will get hot and wont sound as good and you will probably burn it up. |

The radio is a Cobra 29WXST with a stock Cobra Mic. What are people using to measure the wattage? |

Blazingguns..we are talking about an external watt meter that is connected between the radio and antennea to measure radio output power and swr. Copper has some nice meters. Take a look..... http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/product_display.cgi?categories=METERS

Copper sells a Synchron swr 2001 meter that's really nice for the price. This is what you use to check your wattage output, swr, etc. Your 29 needs to be adjusted by an experienced CB tech to match that amp. If not it will overdrive the amp, sound terrible, and be quite disappointing. |

Yes, I'm new at this. I will go ahead and buy a meter from Copper and meassure the wattage on the radio carrier. I maybe new, but I learn quick. Where inside the radio do I adjust the wattage output. I understand it needs to be around 1.5 -2 watts on dead key. And, Thanks Alot to all for helping me. It's greatly appreciated. |

In a Cobra 29 there's a bit of board work to get it to 1.5w carrier and still maintain peak modulated power. |

When my meter comes in, I will test the carrier wattage and report back to you. I do have a couple of years electronics from high school to help me out although that was a number of years ago. I am familiar with boards, resistors, capacitors, pots, etc... Again, thanks for the help. |
