IMO, they were just a gimmick. Many leaked after some use anyway. The coil inside probably would not dissapate any more heat to the oil than it would if it was open to the air. Plus, if you had that much heat, you probably have a problem that even the oil could not cure.

In order for a coil to work in this location on the radiator, it must be insulated accross a portion of the radiator it occupies. Look closely at your antenna and see if it has some type of insulating material in there or does the radiator just go straight up thru the whole mess?

I always figured they were just window dressing and were not technically sound.

What do you think?

GEESE this sounds like the moble antenna that had a container of water at the bottom and clamed to be so much better because your signal always goes father over water ...... I'M not kidding house of radios here in largo fla sold them for years.... And people told me they worked!

i think they are just some junk that they thought would make people think they must be really good if you have to have oil to keep it cool they look like trash especially after they have been in the sun awhile and the oil starts getting darker i wouldnt buy one but i have seen them on many trucks of course this is just my opinion

I used to run duels on a Dodge Van, they got out real well local as well as skip. But you've got to get the oil coil above the roof of your Vehicle. However, they will eventually leak.

Ok 93 you got my intrest up why would you put oil in a coil? to me it would kill Q and at some point get hot expand and bust the container.Who makes this thing ? To be honest it sounds like a gimmic to me.

Bruce, I'm not an antenna manufactuer, just a guy who tried the antenna and was pleased with the performance at the time. If i recall correctly, the oil was suppose to disapate the heat quicker than other types of coils, especially, if you're running power. I asked the same questions you asked, an received a lot of double talk. If you find out, please post so we'll all know. By the way, I was running a Magnum 400 with a Cobra 29 Modified. "Have a good day"

93 You off to a good start you ASK questions and know double talk good start ! See most gimics tossed at CBers are the old line TALKS FARTHER THAN ALL OTHERS! If that was true the hams would all be using them too. Now i'll bet if a REAL test was done with CONTROLED range conditions your old filled coil would fall on its face. REAL world is called Q if you make a coil and stick it on a antenna it has a quality factor or Q now to the end user this is babble tech talk but the hugher the number the more efficent the coil is and the less loss the traid off is you also get less bandwidth ... your SWR goes up faster as you change channles.
Now ANYTHING you stick in the coils field will soke up some RF thats why the oil gets hot DOH! and to get it hot guess where your signal just went ? Thats right up in smoke! So real world is this the BEST coil is AIR wound with nothing around it.. the worst are the little ones wound with thin wire.... and of course the LONGER the antenna the better it will work. Go look at any ham radio antenna web site see how many oil filled antennas are for sale i would say ZIP. As for the real world ive found for most people a 48-54 inch wip does a fair job the 7 foot fiberglass ones work somewhat better and a full 102 the best.

There's a company, I believe they are in Memphis, that makes one of the antennas with a big base coil that's oil filled. They call it the "Sewer Pipe Antenna" because the base looks like a piece of about 4 inch white sewer pipe. It's advertised to handle more power and outperform other base loads. Well, it won't, a friend that runs a shop tested them a few years ago when they came out. He was running a couple hundred watts in his pickup, sitting still at his shop, talking to three or four base stations 40-50 miles distant. He compared the sewer pipe to a Wilson 1000 and 2000, all were roof mounts. In his unscientific test, the Wilsons actually did a little better. He didn't test the sewerpipe for high power handling capabilities, but I doubt them on that also. The antennas that will handle high power have the big open coil, some looks like a coil spring from a vehicle.

Does anyone have an idea on a antenna system for a vr9000 and 667v. I like duals, big tall antennas are out since I go in the mountains alot. I like the wilson 5000 and the old penetrator that had the wire around the load. Im using this on a 84 chev truck with mirror mounts and it wont go in my garage as it is. Thanks..

I remember vividly in 1982 meeting a Channel 6 fellow at a coffee break and he was running a TNT 600 plus in a Full size chevy pickup. Back then the TNT 600 Plus and the messenger 1000 were the biggest transistor mobile amps you could buy. He had a roof mounted 102" steel whip and he had the bed lined with SOD.......yes SOD with a ground wire running from a bolt on the ball mount into the dirt. He claimed when he had a keydown contest with someone he would wet the grass and it would improve the signal strength. Everytime I think about that guy I LMAO.
