JUNIOR THE Cobra 138 in my mind is a good radio, I had one back then when they first came out, it was good sounding and could really get out, but that was a lot of years ago, someone else must have thought that it was a good radio, when I lived in Tahoe some one stole it from my truck.

I also have the Cobra 139xlr, which I have in line and it is a sweetheart.I use it back and forth, it talked from Northern CAL to Kentucky on 12 wiskey.

very encouraging..sometimes the older radios have better components and circuitry is what is in my mind...companies weren't so worried about $$$$ and actually tried to build a good product... just my thoughts though

The 138GTL, 139XLR, Robyn 520D, president madison and wash, realistic TRC 458, 457 all use the same board as the cobra 138. *the famous 858 PLL* Not really a strong talker but a great board for the guys that like to convert them for the uppers ands lowers!!!!

CARDINAL, Yes I have the Cobra 139 XLR 40 channel, I got it in the early 70s, I put a REDCO DIGI SCAN, frequency counter on it in the 70s , to convert it to the upper and lowers, and back then you didn't need a amp on those frequencys no one was hardly there.

IT was probably before y'alls time, but the first cobra 138 was a 23 channel crystal AM/SSb mobile.
It and the early 139 base had the same board, and in my opinion, were not very good radios. The 132 mobile and 135 base ran the same board, and were pretty good radios for their day, they were also 23 channel am/ssb radios, but were completely different than the 138 and 139, probably made by different companies. One crystal swap in the 132/135 would get you 23 more channels.

I have a 40 channel 138XLR. Sounds good on ssb, but real noisy on the receive end.

The Texas Ranger 296 is an older design Cobra 148 GTL with different exterior styling. Copper has a killer price on them and if you are looking for a loud CB radio get one of those........ of course to get 40 uppers and 40 lowers is going to require an Expander Kit and $50 to invest.
I really don't think a Cobra 138 will be a collectable, but for 40 bucks buy it.
