Can a guy take an amp like a TX star 500 and drive it with a radio like a 3500 100 watter? I knew a guy that once told me you could drive a 500 with a high power radio and get about 800 or so out of the 500........

Why not??
I know several guys that run a 2 pill into a 4 pill and get more out of the 4 pill using the 2 pill as a driver... so WHY the heck not???????

Because the input is at a set wattage.

If you overfrive it you will blow the front end out of it.

100 watts is to much for the 500 even though it is a highdrive. It fits my friends deltaforse just fine.

Im sure you have computer speakers on your computer, play music at about 1/4 - 1/2 and it will sound better than running it all out.

Why you ask? Because your overdriving it. And when you overdrive somthing, components or parts will fail.

Like driving your vehicle with the accellerator all the way to the floor until somthing fails, which wont take long with todays new vehicles.

Im not doubting your friends and their amp setup, but if they are running a 2 pill into a 4 pill amp thats not made to take it then thats dumb. Dont they have common sence?

I would like it if 671 would add his 2 cents to this subject.

The texas star 500 uses the 2879 transistors. According to my calculations, the 2879 is good for 125 watts at the absoloute MAX

125
X 4
_____
500 total watts with only 20 in.

This amp requires 45 amps of draw.

100 watts is 5 times that which would kill that amp in a very short itme.

Can you drive it, of course.
The reason some can drive 4 transistor amps and others are not recommended is the design of the amp. A DX500 uses small 1" transformers on the output and the input is designed to respond to very low drive levels for maximum performance with radio drive. A 667 is designed suppressing the input of the drive section so as not to overdrive the final section. 1-1.5w carrier input to a 667 is fine with about 15-20w peak. Your 500 will show more "numbers" with more drive, but gets into saturation easily.
You can pump all the psi you want into a 500cfm 2 barrel, but it will never flow the fuel of a 1050 double pumper....even if they both are bolted on a 350cid. See what I mean?
So to your point, yes you can drive it, I've done it. Do I recommend it? No. Other amplifiers that are designed to take the drive you're talking about might be better suited for longevity and purity.

Hey there Hoosier, if you want a 4 pill amp you can drive with say a 2970, or a small amp then try this. As was stated the Texas Star will respond best with 4 watt dead key (or less) and say 20-30 watts of drive. It's just the way the amp was made. Now get youself an X-Force 400HD, or a Joker J400, or any other comp style box and they will just eat up the drive you give em. It's just the way they are made. So for example set the 2970 to dead key 12 watts and swing to 100-125 and that 4 pill comp box will scream. Good luck and good day.

Problem is most of those comp boxes are not made with the SSB operator in mind whatsoever.

Just tell X-Force and they will bias it for ssb. Or you can get there other unit which is the Magna force and it already comes with ssb.

That is correct, you can order them class B biased, or get a Magna Force they built already made for SSB. Also the Joker can be had with regulated AB-1 bias as well, like mine. There are those that run the TS 500 with a Mod V, but the TS500 just does not respond to a 1 pill driver like say an X-Force 400HD (four 2879's) I will have to check but a 400HD with a driver should see 800-1000 watts. On the down side it will pull 100 amps. Take care.
