If you're referring to the Ranger RG-99, I'd steer clear. The Midland is a nice rig, but the Magnum 257 would be a bit better chioce in that style. |

I had a Ranger RG 99 and it was a really great rig!!! If you get it youd be happy! It talked great on SSB and AM had it over a year until i traded it in on a Connex DX 4800 and i was NOT happy with it at all!!!! I know a guy that bought a Magnum 257 and he had it about 2 weeks and hated it.... Diff strokes for diff folks. |

Hoosier i bought 10 of the 485's the low power ver of the 257 for our 10 meter group NOT ONE of the guys is unhappy with his. I bought 2 of the 959's i was was going to use one as a base one moble YUCK losy on ssb i was not inpresed with it at all and sold them. Now the guy who bought them had some clown " HOP THEM UP " he did then he brought them back to me ( not working )of course. There are many radios out thesr copper carries a wide group of them i agree diff strokes for diff folks..... just like most anything else. Bruce |

Hoosier, it's great that you had 1 RG99 that worked great for you. I had 2 that worked great. The other 18 were plagued with a variety of problems. I've had about 15 Magnum 257s pass by me and not one with a defect. Keep in mind when you get a recommendation from me, it's not based on "one" unit I had and it did well or poorly, it's usually after several units that I make a judgement. |

I concur with bruce on the Titan 485---terrific performance / features for the money. I would expect the same from a Magnum 257, and I have heard that RF Limited has very good tech support/service should you have any trouble with their product. |

Tech671.... The 99 i had was one of the best mobile SSB rigs ive had and like an idiot i sold it!! I dunno i just had great luck with it but that 4800, although the same chassis, was NOT one of the better radios ive owned!!! I hated the thing on SSB. Drifted like a unmoored boat on SSB and the receive was horrible if you had a guy that was close to you it sounded distorted! |

loyd my 458 ( the low power ver ) reciver out of the box was .4uv FM .5UV AM and .3 UV SSB the reason your hearing noise is this radio has as good a reciver as some of the ham radios EVEN on FM if you are a ham on 29.6 FM you will work the world with it by the way if you did not get copper to tune it up next to the mike jack on the board inside the radio is the mike gain control pot if you turn it up your audio will go sky high in fact someone told mine was too high .... he said he could hear the paint drying here in the shack! |
