The 148GTL used to be a much better radio than it has turned into. In order to keep the new ones from deviating off frequency once it's been modified, you have to replace half the parts. |

I don't have a 148 now but do have two Texas Rangers 296s one is the Gold trim F model and i am going to hang on to them. There is not a dought in my mind that is the best CB radio that is out there. Great sounding Audio and clear as a bell receiver and they don't break! |

Purchased my 148 GTL in '97 and the best unit I have. Unlocked the clarifier, installed a 10 turn and added an Astatic power mic; the transmitting and receiving range is quite amazing with a Wilson 1000 antenna. |

A MODIFIED "OLDER" 148 WITH THE 10 TURN POT. , IS IN "MY" OPINION ONE OF THE MOST DEPENDABLE RIGS EVER MADE ! AND I HAVE THEM ALL ! WHY THEY HAD TO COME UP WITH THIS "SOUND TRACKER BIT" AND MESS UP THE RECIEVE ON THEM I'LL NEVER KNOW . |

Pre 1998 Cobra 148 GTLs were the loudest AM audio radios ever. The New Texas Ranger 296 radios are really old style 148s. What is this 10 turn pot you are talking about. |

IT'S A 10 TURN LOCK TO LOCK POTENTIOMETER , THAT YOU PUT IN PLACE OF THE ONE TURN POT. USED FOR YOUR CLAIRIFIER ! I HAVE THEM IN MY 148s, GRANT XLs , MY WASHINGTON & MY COBRA 2000 ! IT MAKES TUNING SSB SIGNALS IN A BREEZE ... NO MORE TOUCHY CLAIRIFIERS & THE RADIO SEEMS MORE STABLE TO ME ! IT'S ONLY A 3 WIRE JOB, BUT MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH RADIO YOU HAVE ; FOR EXAMPLE , OLDER GRANT XLs & NEWER ONES "NOT THE BACK LIGHTED ONES" ... I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THOSE ,BUT THE OTHER TWO USE DIFF. COLOR WIRES ON THE CLAIRIFIER; SO MAKE SURE YOU USE THE RIGHT BOOK FOR THE RADIO YOU HAVE , AND IT'S A SNAP !!! I WOULDN'T RUN ONE OF THESE RADIOS WITH AN UNLOCKED CLAIRIFIER WITHOUT ONE ! IT'S WORTH THE $$$ AND THE SMALL AMOUNT OF LABOR TO ME !! 73's ........ GREYHOUND |

Hey guys, I may be wrong, but the new Connex 4800 DXL seems to be the 148F GTL which apparently comes stock with all these goodies that have to be modified into the old 148. This radio also has a 6 digit freq counter. Apparently no one owns one of these because I am buying one and no one can comment on its performance. I have made numerous posts within this forum in an attempt to get answers. Anyone out there got a spin on this? |

I have three of the older 148's. I used to run one of them with a turner +3 mike as my primary base for about three years. In my opinion this radio is the most dependable AM/SSB going. Best sounding xmit, best sounding rx of any of my other radios(galaxy's connex's 2950's, 2510's). If I could only have one radio it would be the 148 with the extra channels and unlocked clarifier. Don't be fooled because they don't swing as much as the higher priced spread. They definitely produce the "torque" to get out. |

Straycat.........I like the way you put it. Doesn't have the swing but has the Torque. I sold a used 148 to a local once and he brought it back because it would only peak swing to 12-15 watts.......some people are preoccupied with peak watts they don't know what they have. |

Sparkomatic/CM3885- Three and a half months ago, at a CB shop I visit, I saw an old 148 GTL with 575 mic and an old Grant XL with a D104 Black Handheld mic that were both being traded-in for some FSR equipment at the same time. The guy wanted $100 for the GTL, a little less for the Grant XL. I just had to have that 148 GTL. I bought the 148 GTL and left the Grant XL behind thinking that the Grant is just like the GTL! Well, I sent the 148 GTL to Tech 307 and he did his thing, and lo and behold the radio down right smokes. So I got to thinking, man, I should have bought that Grant XL too! I called the place back and asked if they still had the Grant? They said they sold the Grant to an older gentlemen. I hung up the phone thinking I had lost out on something I should have bought but didn't,... you know the feeling. Well, I frequent this shop a lot, so last Friday I stopped in and guess what was on the trading table??,... yep, that old Grant XL was back! The exact same one! I was tickled pink! The man had gotten frustrated with the extra channels that were in it and he couldn't figure it out. He had put fingernail polish on the knobs to help him a bit while driving. He even had the printout of channels too. Well, I grabbed that radio for a lot less than $100!!, cleaned it up and put it on the air. That Grant XL swings 15-20W, plenty of audio, adjustable AM drive to 0 watt dk and up to 5W dk. Extra channels too. On a radio check a guy about 20 miles away said, "I'm getting about 2 on you but you're loud!" I'm sending it to 307 for him to put the channels on the back and AM drive too. You're ABSOLUTELY right! People don't know what they have. Both of these radios, 148 GTL and Grant XL, have all the Torque. I have heard nothing but compliments on both radios! I think BigBob said it the best, Amps, we don't need no stickin' amps". LOL My 2 cents. XLAXX |
