Will Palomar amps work on CB right out of the box or do they need modifying? Thanks. |

Does anyone know if the Palomar 775V is any good. Some say 700 watts pep but that is wishy washy for a (4) 2290 final amp. I'm thinking about buying one for SSB. |

Actually the Palomar 775v has (6) transistors - (2) SD1446 X (4) 2290 Palomar 775v |

The new Palomar 450 Elite may be the one for SSB, it is class ab1. I don't know 'bout the 775V. (???) I've had a shooting star 225 for a few years now, even put it behind my 5054DX (6 meter) a couple times. It's still goin strong. It seems to be identical to the Palomar 250's with the fins on the top. Znut |

It's really easy to over drive the amp with the Ranger 5054dx. I had the power just cracked open to a couple watts and the relay wouldn't hold. It may work with a keying circuit much better. That being said, the impedance curve on those SD 1446 transistors is SO FLAT and they are pretty tolerant of poor matching (thats why they use them in those amps) that the amps actually do work. I'm not even the only one in my town that has tried it. The other guy did use a tuner before the amp but noted that he didn't absolutely need it. What kind of radio do you use on 6? Znut |

In the 775v, Do the two 1446's drive the four 2290's? If so, isn't that overkill? |

How many amps will the 775V draw on Am, and then on SSb. I am going to use the one I got from auction on my base. Going to have to invest in power supply and or use my large new boat battery. Thank you. rosco rosco@tctc.com |

I think if you were to put a 775 on a Bird 43P you might get 500-600 honest watts, if you just want to feel good yank the limiter in your radio and use a Dosey meter. On a more serious note, you might look for a good clean AB-1 amp if you are into SSB. A Texas Star 400 or 500, the Cobra 450xl is a great SSB amp, the whole Magna Force line work well on SSB and are fan cooled class B. And the best in SSB is a custom built Joker amp with regulated AB-1 bias. The whole Boomer/Palomar line are built with price in mind and with that corners must be cut. If price is your main consideration look at the RM line of amps. |
