I got one dx2547 two weeks ago (brand new) and a sky lab antenna. some guys could hear me about 20-28 miles away with 3db loud and clear. I have the radio in my house with the antenna 30ft. high I am very surprised because the radio has only 4 watts of power. or may be the antenna I only get 1.0 swr with the antenna matcher I got. I am going to take the radio with a local tech he does very good jobs with radios. he told me he can get 40 watts out of the 2547. let's see what happen. Any comments on the dx2547 or the sky lab antenna???

I bought a SkyLab awhile ago. From 26Mhz to just under 28Mhz the swr never goes above 1.3. It is still low above 28Mhz, but I never go that high. I run a President 2600, which seems to love this antenna, and I love it to. I would say, it's the best antenna I have ever talked on. Mind you, the directions are poor, and the antenna was not as easy to put together as I thought it would be, but, it was worth it.

Hey DXuall, sounds like your radio and antenna are doing fine. I would be cautious about someone telling you that they can get 40 watts out of a 4 watt radio. I have seen it done, of course, but I will tell you that I do not see or hear any difference on the air with these rigs albit they probably will show more on your meter.

These mods can and have made lots of stabality problems for radios such as yours. If you want a little more output, just get a good 100 watt amp and then run your radio at an easy pace and it should last a lifetime.

I have several rigs around here that have been modified for power and are now only good for parts.

I love my Stardusters (I think that is the Skylab) and the higher it gets (within reason) the better is seems to work. Just curious, if you're working 11 meters, why do you feel the need to use a tuner with this antenna?

I got my radio monday night it is working great! The tech got 1 watt dead key and modulation swing to 40 watts. He told me that i can use an amp and all i had to do was put the rf power down to 1 watt output and it should work fine. (if you put the rf knob all the way to the left you get 1 watt output dead key and modulation swing if you put it in the middle you get 1 watt dead key and 25-30 watts modulation and the knob all the way to the right 1 watt dead and 40 watts modulation) Also i have a voyage vr9000 that he modified almost 2 years ago and i have not had any problems with it except for one of the wires that he put to get talkback it disolded and that's it. I don't know, i think he is good at radios and yes i work 11 meters and the reason i use antenna matchers, tuners almost the same thing is to lower my swr's to 1.0. I don't know if it is a good idea to use them on the skylab or not. What do you all think??? (the vr9000 does 20 watts dead key and 30 watts with modulation which is also a great radio)

Hmmm 20 watts key 30 watts swing??? Not good! What most guys abide by is the so called 1 to 4 peak to carrier ratio. Say your radio keys 10 watts and swings to 40 thats the 1 to 4 ratio. The best way to sound good on the air is to go by that ratio. Although myself i go by the 1 to 5 or 1 to 6 ratio. Makes me even louder! But if i were you id get that 2547 carrier up above the 1 watt key. I know a lot of guys that brag on the air about their radios keying up a 1/2 watt and swinging to 50 or so but Eww they sound like doogie poo poo! Less than 4 watts carrier is bad unless you run an amp then i wouldnt run less than 2 to 3 watts. This is what i know myself from running my stuff and ive found i sound best with about a 3 to 4 watt carrier if i drive my amps.....

In regards to the DX 2547,

I purchased one. Brand new, Works great on my A99. I had to do an alignment on the freqs when I got it though. It was reading 27.1865 etc, on both the internal and my external frequency counter. Not a big deal though to do a complete alignment on this rig when you got the tools to do it with. I have not peaked the power or the modulation on it though, as I run a 100 watt amp anyway, so I saw no reason to fool with it. I love this radio. I have truly found "The one" perfect radio for me. Best rig I've seen since the Cobra 2000GTL. One more thing, I find there is really no need to run a power mic with this unit either. As Galaxy radios have plenty of modulation power all by themselves.

Did you have the trouble before your radio was "tuned?" If not, try using a TVI filter if you know someone who would let you borrow theirs. If the interference goes away the "tech" who "tuned" your radio adjusted the filter on the output. I doubt he'd know how to fix it, so you can either buy a TVI filter or take the radio to someone who knows what they're doing to get it fixed. If that doesn't help you aren't experiencing TVI - it's another problem.

It could be just near field radiation causing reciever overload. The only way to cure that is to move the CB antenna or the TV antenna. It's probably not RF coming down the coax from the antenna. If this is a "Starduster" style antenna the radials will do a good job of keeping the RF from the coax.

Try the TVI filter and let us know if that helps.

I would imagine TVI was the least of your concerns at that point Bruce!

It's amazing what lighting does to a groundplane It was replaced by a ringo which works about the same ..... still no TVI a nice coil of 9 turns of coax at the antenna base makes a nice choke! If you have TVI i would be looking at other things since a clean signal should not cause the problem.

I am currently thinking of upgrading to a galaxy DX 949 from a cobra 148 gtl nw/st. The 148 was nothing but problems for about 6 months now. with no mods and a galaxy 250 watt mobile amp and a wilson 1000 trunk lip mount will this be a excellent setup? This is mounted in a 1990 chevy lumina.

Good radio and antenna, get an amp and leave the radio alone, it will all last for years idf you do.
