I am considering selling my 148 NW ST and getting the TR-696F. For a small $ difference it seems to have better features especially after the mods. How does the quality compare? Is the 696F a better overall deal? |

Why dont you get a ranger or magumn 257? i see your a ham and if you can work 10 meters it would make more sence to me .... |

Want a CB for CB. No 10 meter radio can touch the performance of my "real" ham rig. Been down that route before with the TS-5010 and HR-2510/2600. |

696 is a much better radio
rx is great!!!!!!
tx is like the grant xl
hope this help
just turn up the mod vr
and turn up ssb vr
and u will get lot s of " wow what are you on"
just don't clip anything this is a clean loud radio... but its great on ssb

I understand i did that with the galaxy 959 it was a disapointment but maby i was asking too much it drifted with any change in tempture and the internal speaker in mine was so-so at best.
As for real ham radios the HTX-10 and TITAN and MAGUMN are as good as anything. They are stable and sound great! Remember i also own ( after i got rid of a ts-830 a ts120 ) a FT-840, 2 alinco dx-70's AND a ft-100d! Now as for all around its tough to beat the ft-100d but at almost 1000 dollars its alot more money that a mag 257 at 170 bucks! Now if your looking for a cb only radio the tr696 sounds great...... |

Got the TR-696F and touched up the Mod, ALC, & AM power just a wee bit. Holy •••• does this radio sing!! Runs rings on TX & RX around my Grant and 148! Awesome AM TX -- great reports with my D104 Silver Eagle. SSB is very nice for regular & freeband - that freq counter sure is handy. SSB is better with my Icom IC735 but not that much better.

Hello all,
How would you rate this "new receiver" design of the TR-696? Is it really that great of a receiver? Do their so called "Advanced Noise Filter" really what they claim??? Is the receiver really both "high gain" yet "low-noise"? Is it similar to a Ham Rig with AF DSP..? Would you say it's AM receive is better that a newer Ranger 2950DX? |

I did not have the "old" receiver to compare it too. I would say the TR-696F does RX better than the older RCI-2950 and the Uniden HR-2510 I once had. From my experience with the older Ranger 10 meter radios, I would only want to try their 6300/6900 or the RCI-2980. But all those 10 meter radios are way overpriced. I would get a used entry level Yaesu, Alinco, or Icom before I bought a 10/12 meter ham rig!
The ANF, well the jury is out on it but I see little effect. It does roll off the high freq. audio a little too much. That roll-off just make the station sound muffled. So far I am very disappointed in the ANF but find the ANL/NB quite adequate. I plan to talk with a tech at Ranger about the ANF. In this day of DSP, I just assume plug in an audio DSP instead. Why I don't see audio or IF DSP in high end SSB CB's bugs me.
The RX is high gain but the noise follows along. It IS NOT low noise like a ham rig with DSP--no way! There is no replacement for a good DSF, even if it is only in the audio path. |

I agree that the 696F mobile is a better radio..
If the cobra had a 6 diget freq counter and was running for the same price, then i would pick that, but sence the regular 148 don't i will stick with the Texas Ranger 696F...
For the price on the other hand, i would go with a ten meter rig.. The TR696F is the first cb i bought in 12 years, a good cb, i still prefer the 10 meter rigs just the same... Which you may see that some of them are the same price... |
