the 959 has echo i beleive, and a 5 diget freq counter, the 696f has the 6 diget freq counter and no echo.. I would suggest if your going to talk alot on sideband, that sometimes that 6th diget can make or break the radio...

No echo on the 959, no sixth digit either but then again its not 10-meter so a clarifier is all you need. That big meter, not to menntion the over all good looks of the DX959 would make me say go with that. My undertanding is that its a good AM talker and tough and reliable too. Yup, IMHO, go with the DX959.

Ferd

Im no fan of galaxy and i had 2 959's but for what they were build to do they do the job. Now if you want to compair them to my ft-100d FORGET IT..... but you could buy 6 dx-959's for the price on 1 ft-100 YUGO / BMW take your pick. Right now the 2 best small radios i use are my Lincoln with chipswich on 10 meters its as good on all modes as anything made and for CB a Grant LT. CB's are NOT " PURE JUNK RADIOS " The Grant LT UNMODIFIED sounds as good as it gets on the air
and the reciever is more than good enough. There are junk cb sets the makers of these radios dont put much efford into building a good radio since cost is the main concern but there are good ones too.

Of course the Galaxy 959 is "junk" compared to a Kenwood or Icom. How could you even begin to compare them.

Comparing the 959 to other CBs would be more fair. However, I'm afraid the 959 would still rank among one of the worst and the Grant as one of the best as far as CB receivers go.

Jeff i had 2 of them (959's) bought from copper both were exactly as discribed and tested within specs. HOWEVER I was not impressed with them they didnt have the " FEEL " im use too. The reciever noise blanking is poor at best i also didnt think it had a good signal to noise radio just didnt sound quite on week signals again my opinion .... "noise floor" as Ferd called it although " NOISE FLOOR " is realy the point where the internal noise of the reciever rf amp maskes the signal. All that aside i could EASLY see why a CB user would easly like the radio. The grant LT has suprised me VERY nice radio and i got a 7.8 mhz channelguard ready to go in ..... fot the ch 13 forum of course.... The GRANT LT will be used as my cb base and i will be using either the Lincoln of the FT-100 on 10 meters ..... depending on band conditions.

Why would you use your Grant as a base when your Lincoln has a far better transmitter and receiver? To me, it would be like comparing a coathanger to your TOP ONE. And putting a Channel Guard in the Lincoln would really tighten its great receiver up all the more.

I'm just asking out of curiousity Bruce. No bashing intended. I know very well that you know what you're doing.

Jeff I REALY TRY to set a example. Here in my shack i keep things as leagal as i can.... its almost impossible not to break some rule. The receiver mods to the grant are compleated with the 7.8mhz channelguard installed and alignment on a $23000 shop gen checked! transmitter checked and its sounds GREAT! Now as for the lincoln its NEXT the channelguard filter is stiiing in frount of me as i type i was looking over the schmatic thinking what else it could use as long as i got it open and on the operating table! My Lincoln has the chipswith mod and having used MANY channel guards im expecting a major tighting up of a already nice set the lincoln will be my base for the 10 meter net..... with the FT-100 ready to go if i need to go to high power .... thats the story!

Thanks for your help Bruce. YOU'RE THE MAN!!!

By the way, I sure like that little MFJ-945E you have. Looks like it takes up less room than my 949E. What antenna are you hooked up to where it's needed?

73s Bruce and thanks again.

Rci 2990!! my thoughts too, with the brands he rolled called of,i would'nt even have thought about a 959.everyboby knows kenwood is A+++(even a dumb CB'ER like me)i own a kenwood ts690s base station,.. nothing in cb compares to it.i'would not dare compare it cb.but i would compare it to those pain in the a** yaesu's(hard to keep on freak) when he tosses out the 959 the yaesu can go as company!! yaesu seem to be the yugo of ham radio but with the caddy price tag!! 505
