What was the most powerful 11 meter base that you ever heard of ??? I recall back in the early 80's there was a cb station up in michigan that was operating somewhere around 27,000 watts !!!

Biggest one I ever saw used a 4CX15000 tube. It roached my Coaxial Dynamics 10kW slug. A Bird-made slug will take 10,000 Watts average power. The Coaxial Dynamics "clone" slug says "10 kW PEAK", right there on the front. Can't say I wasn't warned. It did peg the scale on PEP mode, but only showed 5000 average. Live and learn, I guess. It pays to read the fine print FIRST

What id like to know is what kind of thrill do these guys get when they run that much power!!?? Its mostly an ego thing i think or maybe so they can make up for the lack of something else in life!! LOL ;-)

I know of a local that owns 1000 acres in a rural area and he has a 185 foot tower with stacked 7 element beams. He runs a Henry 2K amp and a ? Driver plus a Madison radio.........30 miles away in my mobile he puts the meter in the red. Not absurd power like 25-50 Kilowatts but all antenna.
Maybe the power trip is not a Power Hungry thing but a matter of pride. I take a lot of pride in sounding blaring loud and strong all the time in my mobile but that's me. Truckers that spend most of their working life in a semi should have the best equipment because of the usefulness that a CB brings. Whenever I hear a trucker with a weak horrible radio I already have an unfavorable opinion of him.
Some people go through life doing things half baked and some take pride in everything they do.........I don't judge the 55,000 watt guys as nuts but as Proud CBers.

Spark ...... this is a land of laws i would be willing to bet this same proud CB er also sees nothing wrong with using frequencys outside the 40 ch, dosnt care how much havic he causes for other local cb users and lets it be known he is biggist and baddest around. Pride is not breaking the law pride is doing things BETTER and showing others by example what ever it is you do that you by knolage and skill are setting a example. Any person who runs 55000 watts is nothing more than a lawbreaker ..... with money. Hams have the same bunch its maby not quite as bad and they get caught but they cause the same problems on bands like 20 meters too. I have a motto ones radio skill goes down as power go up .... check out QRP users....

Bruce the local that has the big base station doesn't cuss or blow people off the air....he is about the nicest fellow you'll ever meet. If someone asks him to standby he does and he has no neighbors to cause interference problems. If there are agitators out there he turns the radio off. Not everyone that has very powerful equipment is a jerk. I guess if you want to crack down on lawbreakers 85% of the vehicles in Florida are driving over the speed limit and that is one hell of a lot more dangerous to other citizens than illegal power.......speeding can kill..... can illegal transmitter power do that?
A gun in the hands of a jerk can be dangerous but in the hand of a responsible person it is a non issue.

Sparkomatic,
I didn't take what Bruce said as a question of the personality or decnecy of the guy in question. It is simply a question of legality. CB amplification in any form is illegal. I agree with your last satement if the owner has a legal license for the gun. Otherwise, it is just as illegal as a CB amp, no matter how nice the holder.
Further I interpreted Bruce's remarks such that people should not feel pride in illegal acts, and that the things that one should be truly proud of, like the skill to truely understand and apply knowledge of radio, are subjects for genuine pride.
By the way, there was a thread in the CB VS Ham forum where the first post talked of a story where interference from distant radios nearly cost a boater his life. YES, an illegal transmitter can kill.

Just my $0.02 worth.

barracuda is correct no matter how "nice" one is this in not pride . We see this on the ham bands where some of thoes with money do not feel the need to obay the law. Pride is a feeling of doing things BETTER of leading the way like thoes who work moonbounce or space craft you are a leader. Now we are in the down side of the sunspots i wonder what will he do when no matter what power the band is CLOSED.

A proud CB station to me isnt all power and audio but IMHO is how well the operator uses his station and operates his equipment. Foul mouthed, overmodulated, splatter box, tear up the neigbors TV, CB stations to me are a scourge on the band (and unfortunately, an all to common thing these days..*sigh* ) and give the good CBers a very bad name.. Legal and otherwise.

I do not see anything wrong with running 5k watts on ch. 6 but a barefoot radio works well in town. Or if you have to close someones lips it's nice to be able to muscle an agitator off the air.

"I do not see anything wrong with running 5k watts" The quote of the day.... Power it seems always solves everything. The problem on cb always has been CB is in the WRONG place. In the 40-50's building a 450 mhz radio was expensive VOLINE and others tried with regen modulated osc transceivers junk even for there day and class B cb died. So someone came up with the idea of puting cb on 27 a prime dx/moble band ....and better yet outlawing DX. Its going to be interesting over the next 3 years with the MUF as low as it is to see how much power will do for anyone on this band ........if BPL dosnt render it USELESS.

People are soo fascinated with running huge watts and ignore the real aspect of a good station........ The antenna............ :-(

Me myself i first build up a good antenna system buy the best lowset loss coax and the best antenna i can get and then worry about the radio, mikes, amps and lastly, the watt meters... All in that order....

i always let agitators have their say. i might make fun of them back •••• them off and maybe do it with some power, but on that same note, CB radio is one of the last pieces of radio spectrum where your free speech rights still apply.

now for running sick power in the 5 digits, yes id do it. but id also wait till i get a huge antenna array up. right now im stuck mobile with only 30 watts. one of the most beautiful things about the CB is the way the citizens who use it have made it into an ungovernable band. you can run any mode, any power, and say whatever you want over the air. \m/total radio anarchy\m/

i dont care about all the dirty amps or heehaws from their home who dont know what theyre doing. its just gonna draw the attn of the FCC away from me. let them screw up the other TVs in their homes when they are turning pots to make the harmonics push the power needle more

I can see running some power as long as its clean.. Whats the problem is there are too many of these Made for CB amps out there that have little or no QC Control at all. They are made cheaply use TV tubes and are just not that good. Im sure Bullett can chime in here with me on this subject.. I am a beliver in running a good antenna, coax, (Id choose a beam anyday over an omni to run big watts! ) getting the SWRS well below a 1.5-1, get the radio itself setup running harmonic free keeping the 1 to 4 swing to carrier ratio in mind , and if you can, and desire to run an amp, get a good one thats ham quality that has REAL Transmit tubes like 3-500Zs or the like.. Then you will be A OK.. I never had anyone ever comalpin about me when i used my setupo at the folkses. I guess it helped that they live in a very small farm town were everyone knew everyone and no one minded my CB thing i had going on back then and somewhat still do.. Heck, my stuff is all still there (except the amp which i sold off it was a KLV 1000P) and if im ever up there i do occasionally turn the radio on and talk.

station quality is a big factor to me.if you run a 1 watt swinging 30 watts radio into any amp its going to bleed and be some what dirty.

if the radio is set right the amp will produce a nice clean signal on a much bigger scale.

i like to work dx on the channels that most of you guys hate. lol(6,11,26,28).

i find it more of a challange to work dx on these channels than on the other channels due to the hi noise cealing and powerfull stations doing thier thing!

im in no way a "big power" station but i do ok on those channels for a little feller because im clean/clear and i use a very good antenna.ive found that i can talk about anywhere at 200-800 watts if conditions are fair.

and i still practice wattage disaplinn, i run only what it takes to do the job.if i can do it on 2 watts than i will.

but i wont lie, if i had 10kw id use it on occation as long as it was a nice clean 10k and it didnt bother locals or niehbors tv's or phones.if it did id have to get rid of it!

but i think you really dont need that much i think its just for showing off!

I've got a friend who runs 10,000 watts (+/- 200 watts) carrier power on channel 6 during the "Super Bowl." His signal is quite a thing to behold! He can drive me into 30dB + on my President Grant mobile from 40 miles away... He uses a modified M108 for an antenna.

I've told him that he is gonna glow in the dark if he doesn't watch it... Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to believe me :-)

2-4cx15000's in a mobile on the superbowl, kilowatt. hows that sound? nearly 20,000 watts dead key, in a mobile. 40,000watts + swing. the engine revving at 5000rpm's is almost as scary as the wattage! & to see the look on peoples faces when we park on the docks with 2 or 3 BBBIIIGGG open air coil antennas is priceless!
when we park on the beach & mount 5 or 6-18' elements to the front & back, well, the looks on peoples faces cannot be explained!
& there are MOBILES out there with more power then that!

Man, I'd love to have that kind of power on 75 meters AM! My weenie-fied 400 watts carrier doesn't quite get it, sometimes...

Do y'all wear lead vests or have any kind of RF shielding around you when running that much power? Just curious...

what's more impressive then the amplifiers are some of the motors they run to get the alternators to energize! they'd make the NHRA guys jealous!

not me, kilowatt, i'm a 5 or 2x8 pill man myself, but do have a couple friends with more disposable income then me. i just accompany them for antenna setup & tuning assistance. check out the pics/keydown links on some of the custom amp websites, & you'll get the idea. there were 2 1999 issues of popular communications that touched upon the subject, & the followup issue had some info from...regarding the subject.
there's a # of vans around the US with an EXTRA motor in back for the alternators, yes plenty of high horsepower bigblocks, with NITROUS to get the revs up, there is a whole underground world surrounding BIG amps. 32 transistors or 2 & more tubes to generate 5kw is the norm on ch6. you just gotta look around.
there's also a few websites that post info on when & where MAJOR keydowns are going to be held...with links to hotels & campgrounds!!!

Hay if you like BIG radios then you should check out www.bigradios,com it's a cb shootout/keydown site where they take video and photos of those shootouts as they happen. Some of those peoples cars have the whole back seat area taken up by the amp and they have 5 or 6 alternators under the hood.

I'm gonna have to check with some of the guys around here that run channel 6 to see if I can get an invite to some of their keydowns.

Rev. Dr. Love (Channel 11 Bro) lives down the road a little. I fixed his 101EX for him a few years ago, so maybe I can tag along with him the next time he goes to a keydown.

It'd be really be cool to see all of that power in action! (I'm wearing my lead vest, though ;-)

I'll also check out the Bigradios site. Thanks for the information, Bluegrass!

YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO GO TO A KEYDOWN? ARE YOU INSANE? Those people are crazy with a capital C.They are using up to 70,000 watts with antennas that are only 5 or 6 feet above the groung, the RF radition would be MORE then enough to cause permenent damage. They are amateurs and what they are doing is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!! I would stay as far away as i can from those people.

Hehehe!

Bluegrass, if I make it to a keydown, I be sure top be WAY away from the area before they do the key-down! I don't care for the ill effects of high RF at all.

I do think that it would be interesting to check out the amplifiers that these guys use, though. I've never though of a DX 1600 as a "driver" until now...

And takes time off of your life! It's dangerous to be exposed to that kind of RF radiation and there are guidelines for how much humans should be around. I recommend wearing an RF monitor and being safe at these events.

I'll never attend one of these... I'd have to kiss my son goodbye and say "see ya later. daddy's gonna go peel a couple years off his life to watch people talk to each other with an insane amount of power less than a mile away"

Not my bag man.

Chad

You and me will be the only ones left your telling it like it is. RF can KILL !

I worked for Sperry microwave back 25 years ago in RADAR and the transmitters we used would COOK ducks on the lake in back of the site 100,000,000 watts ERP at 300 foot is devistating.

Lets be safe and run only the power we need and only the power that is safe.

BTY I run on all the ham bands 100 watts and can work the world with it.

ONE HUNDERD MILLION WATTS!!!!!!!!! I thought 100,000W was a flamethrower. I've seen birds fall out of the bays of big FM stations but never at 300' (well in the air, but not as the crow flies(pun intended))

I may have posted this once but we had a local college kid climb our tower one night as a dare to get the top beacon. Weird thing was that I was outside having a smoke at home and could see the top tower light go from red to white. I jumped in the truck and drove over there to find vomit spattered everywhere under the tower and the fool's wallet. When filing the police report the cop was just amazed when I said that he probably took a good 5 years off his life and may NEVER have kids. All the magnetic stripes were arced over on his CC's and some things were melted together. (what comes in foil and would be kept in a frat boy's wallet? may not need that anymore!)

The amazing thing is that he was soooo daring he actually made it past the AM skirt that occupied the first 100' of the tower at 1000 watts. If you have ever brushed up against one of those or even had an AM burn then you know the holler! eeeeoooooowwwwww (it takes a second or two to get a burnin, kinda like a jellyfish)

I could not imagine taking the full 50,000 watts FM at the top.

Not to be disgusting, but I was getting close to my exposure limits once in a shack for a long time and al of a sudden I felt the urge to go NOW.

I SWEAR it was not the java that liquefied my intestines like that!

RF MAMES, AND OFTEN CAUSES A SLOW PAINFUL DEATH it's just not worth being careless or reckless around! You may not feel the effects now but you will later in life, when you are praying for them to legalize medical pot so you can choke down a meal while chemotherapy is destroying you and making everything taste like you are licking a lead pipe. I'm only 33 years old, I've seen the effects already on old friends before they had the guidelines and regulations. Please friends... BE CAREFUL! It’s not pretty.

I agree. I prefer to have my DNA unaltered.

There are QRP operators who work the world on less wattage than stock CBs. Power is only one factor in communication, and not the most important.

Remember at 96 GHZ a 6 foot dish has gain of over 60 DB! thats 1,000,000 to 1 so a 100 watt transmitter looks like 100,000,000 ! Yes even the 2-10 ghz radars are in the MILLIONS of watts!

Interesting fact in that lab between 1980-1984 24 GIRLS were born but only one boy .... My son
Now it might have nothing to do with RF .... or does it?

Have you approached anyone about this or asked a medical professional whom has dealt with different radiation symptoms? It's interesting to me. Granted I only worked in broadcast from 1999-2004 and very occasionally now during changeovers or builds. But, my wife and I are thinking about starting a family and sometimes I wonder......

I have adpted our son (his father died when he was an infant) so this would be my biological first, we have also conversed in chat about your son, I just want to make sure everything is good as best I can.

I heard two old guys reg chewing one night. They were discussing the recent demise of one of their friends. Seems he was tinkering with an amp that used wave guides. He had the top off. All was well for a couple days, then he started getting chest pains. Seems the RF followed his innards like a wave guide and burnt little holes in his heart!!

Slowhand There is NO diffrence between a high power radio amp and your microwave...... except FREQUENCY and above even CB a strong amp CAN do damage to your body ....

We are all going to become a nation of mishappen "Mutants", with the rampant abuse of RF flooding the airwaves, and then there won't be any reason to go to the movies and see "Night of the living dead", because "We", will all be the living dead.

Hey Bruce. The gubbment has already developed something similar. It a gun that shoots ultra low sound waves at you. Supposed to discombobulate your inards causing you to go all over your self and just have a terrible time. Supposed to be using them on illegals trying to get over the border soon I think.

So I guess that Texas Star DX500 sitting about 10 inches from my head probably isn't doing me much good when I'm talking. That could be why one side of my face feels sunburned and it's been raining.

Watch out for that RF, it loves to get into, and microwave soft tissues like eyeballs and testicles. In the future, if you find that you can't produce the little rug-rats for the wifey/girlfriend, or you need to wear glasses, or even get cataracts, you'll be changing your call sign from Wildrat to "Blind Rat". LOL. If you want to speed up the process just for kicks, get a Radar Gun that the Police use, and leave it in your lap while it's turned off, while driving. ROTF.

Wolverine is correct that RF radiation is harmful. Its not the amp but the antenna to stay clear of. Put them up high as you can. Also you would need a whole lot of wattage to do any real damage at 27 MHZ. I guess if you stare straight at your anteena 12 inches away while transmitting you might pop a brain cell or 2.

Dont worry Crackshot I have a couple extra flux capacitors in the basement, I will send you one, just as long as you tell me exactly how many watts a "jiggawatt" is!

everyone knows that a jiggawatt is equal to three bazillion megawatts.

i've heard of stations having 1.21 jiggawatts coming INTO the antenna, (lightning) but never going out!

Well Kid I guess I am going to have to dig out one of those flux capacitors and send it to you.

But back on the subject at hand, I wish my base was the most powerfull ever, but I hardly think a Uniden 510XL hooked up to a 2 Amp power supply hardly counts as the most powerful.
