A couple of weeks ago my girlfriend broke the mount on my Wilson 1000 antenna.
I replaced it with a different mount made by Victory that has a radial kit that threads onto the mount, then accepts the antenna coil and whip assembly. It has 8 little radials, maybe 5 or 6 inches long.
I have hooked it up and have a very good SWR curve <1.5 to 1 from 26 to 28 with nearly flat at 27.0 It is receiving and transmitting well.
I have no empirical data on whether it has improved or not over the original mount, but it seems to be working well for me.
Tech 833, any comments? This thing cost about 5 bucks more than the Wilson replacement magmount, so it didn't really set me back any real dough.
Maybe Copper can get these? |

These are the GP (Ground Plane) Kits made for Wilson Antennas & others that take the SO239 Mounts.
They come in Black and White.
The Black one's are painted, Much better than the White one's are.
The 1st SARGANT and I are planning a trip down to COPPER, later this week, so I will take a couple of them down to show the Forummaster and see what he thinks.
I have one on all of my Wilson's so he will be able see what they look like mounted on the antenna.
With our F150 SUPER CREW 4 door, it made a big difference on Receive as half of the roof is gone due to the Sun Roof. We use the Mag Mount.
A lot safer (for me) than drilling a hole in the roof of 1st Sargant's new truck!

Yeah, I have the black one. It adds definite "eye-candy" to the antenna. |

I had one, took it off because the radials loosen over time and bumps in the rode. Truckers were telling me, "What kinda antenna is that?!" Good SWR's though. I just didn't want to attract any attention. SWR's are still low,... FLAT without it though.

Almost none at all. It has 'cosmetic/emotional gain'. |

I do not want to discourage people from trying out new things. Although antenna theory tells you how something will/won't work, that does not take in to account the user/purchaser's emotions. Rather than be the 'heavy' or a downer to someone who has been satisfied with a purchase based on feelings, my attitude is if something makes you happy, then that makes me happy for you.
There is no 'magic' to antennas. There is no voodoo or some magic thingie that has not been invented yet. Antennas are transducers which are designed to take the current and voltage from a transmitter and expend it into the ground and atmosphere. During receive mode, the antenna is a transducer designed to take currents from the air and ground and transfer them to the receiver. Adding doo-dads does not change the amount of current or voltage induced into the ground or air, but doo-dads make people happy. That puts me in an unusual position when asked questions like this. Your antenna is supposed to make you happy. Poor performing antennas don't make everybody happy, just the same that very good performing antennas that are plain or boring looking don't make everybody happy either. If your antenna doesn't make you happy for any reason, then change it. If it does just the way it is, then leave it alone. |
