I found a Brand New Cobra 148F GTL last fall in a truck stop and bought it. I have kept it locked up ever since. Got it out and looked at it this morning and asked the question, What are you going to do with this radio? Keep it, sell it? or what? Again, it is brand new. Made in Malaysia. I double checked that one on the back of the radio. In my opinion, Cobra does NOT make radios anywhere as good as these were. Everyones thoughts please. Thanks. Keith in Atlanta

I have one. Had 2 but traded one in on a 99v.

The one I kept has the extra channels. The guy that did the mod used the existing buttons. I asked that he put switches in instead but that didn't happen.

Once a year I have to take off the covers and wiggle the connector for the counter to get all the lights back on.

You say made in Malaysia? I was under the impression that the 148GTL's that are considered with "oh yeah, the old great 148 they don't make anymore" was made in the Philippines and it was the Phillipino origin that differentiated between the great oldies and what they now make. Do some research, perhaps you've got a collectible, perhaps not. If I'm wrong, and I hope I am for your sake, don't touch it, put it away and don't modify it. Worth $$$ if I'm wrong. Do the research and good luck.

Hey Orion. Again, I checked on the back of the radio before I did the posting of my message up top. So your guess is good as mine. I was thinking I would just keep it put away for future.
But then again, I thought why not see what kind of response I would get. Based on his comments, does anyone know regarding Malaysia versus other countries? Well, I just went and looked on box, and the box even says made in Malaysia. Where would I go for research? Just Cobra's web site?

Good question, I've got all these little tid-bits of this and that regarding radios rattling around in my head form searches I've done.. Can't recall at the moment but I don't think Cobra would be helpful, pretty much they jsut plug their latest products. Highly unlikely they'd talk about yesterday's versions especially when their old reputation was more respectable among the CB community. Here's something I remember from who knows where, might be cbworldinformer.com. Be prepared to trudge through that site for info, there is literally tons of quality reviews, but you gotta work through the archives ot find it. At first glance the site looks like there's not much there, trust me, keep digging and you'll be reading all night. Anyway(a funny thing actually), the Cobras, pre-1998 I believe, were built in the Phillipines. Naturally it's label on the rear by the serial number said "Made in the Phillipines". Then, all of a sudden they were made in Myalasia. LOL, it seemed they didn't prepare the new identification backplates for these new origin units and continued to use those left over form Phillipino production. It would say "Made in the Myalasia" The word "the" still left over, they merely stamped over Phillipines with the word Myalasia. Afraid not too helpful to your question but some useless trivia you might get a kick out of. Now, those units made right after their transistion to Mayalasia bore that clumsy phrase. More current 148GTL's were naturally corrected when they ran out of the old back plates and they got the name right. Somewhere in there you might be able to get some indication of how current your model is. IF the grammer is right and says "Made in Mayalasia" then it's not one right at the transistion stage.
THis MIGHT be of some kind of help to you. Serial numbers may indicate the actaul production number. I have a Grant XL which is Phillipino made right in front of me. Probably made in the same factory as they were twins of each other with the exception of slight knob differnces and Uniden Vs. Cobra labeling.(opened up a tech couldn't tell the differnce, exactly the same) It's a long shot theory that this may indicate anything at all with these numbers but here is the Grant XL's serial number:

Made in the Phillipines Serial# 3501037

Look at the board, component side. Does it match
TJE-018HBA (That final "A" is actaully a traingle and not the letter "A")

The main Pll chip is the popular "MB8719"

So, based on some dumb logic, a long shot theory and the variety of numbers perhaps it can tell you a little bit about what you have. I'm always searching the web and dropping stuff in my "favorites box" I'll keep an eye out for info for you. I'm sure I've come across it a million times and never really noticed. Oh yeah, here's a sight with a lot of radio/tech numbers and info. Check out this place..I'm not a tech so it's a bit intimidating LOL. ONe look as you scroll through it and you'll know what I mean. Paste this in and see how it works.Good Luck
