Hello All, just got a Galaxy 2517 a couple of months ago. But had to take it to a tech with an 'O' scope and freq signal generator to get it aligned. So now i can use it to talk SSB, and it does a good job. It gets great feedback on how it sounds. It should also have a 6 digit freq counter instead of a 5. Other than that i wish that RCI or whoever made it took more care to see that it is right before it leaves the factory.
Thanks ahead of time for any comments,
and happy DX'ing...

Hi Ted, wow i was scrolling through these old posts and saw your response. Well i did use a 6 digit freq counter for a while, but i had to constantly adjust the course to keep it on freq which got to be a pain on SSB. So now i have an RCI 2985DX, & the 2517 is just a backup. The 2985DX is a much better rig than the 2517, the SSB is rock solid and it stays right on freq.
The AM isnt as loud as the 2517 but thats better because you wont tend to bleed on the neigbors, and there are no echo toys. I also like that you can select ANL only, rather than both ANL + NB or off, this feature works much better for me. Hope you get to read this and happy dxing !! :-)

Joe...
Just to let you know (you probably already do) the reason you don't have to adjust the 2985 is that you wouldn't know if that last digit flickered for it's a passive counter. The 2517 has an active counter and actually reads what freq you are rx'ing or txing on.
Granted the 2985 is a bit less temp sensitive and over all better geared to the serious ssb operator.

TOPTEN Thank you for the come back, I really love my 2517, I sent it to the shop also at first, I have a seven digit counter also, but when I took it to my tech he put it on the scope and it was off frequency . he showed me how to take the coarse from 12 oclock down past just to 5 on the front counter on the radio on AM , then return it just to where the 6 comes up, key the mike and it shows right on 5 say 27385 when you key up, the seven digit shows out going 2738500 or 01, I never again have people saying I am off frequency.

Thank you for your answer

Hi,
Thanks KB, & Tech 671. If i send it in to Copper can they make it stay put on a SSB Freq? It drifts when you go from one channel to another on SSB (upper or lower). Then you have to key it up on AM and zero out the freq counter again to be on freq. This isnt any fun when your trying to talk skip. Well,,, some time ago i really screwed up both meters on the radio, and lets just say that they both need to be replaced. :-( and uh... the channel indicater is screwed up too. But the radio stills works real good. (im red faced)
Guess it needs some real attention now by a good tech. I learned a valuable lesson, dont take the lid off of your radio, just talk on it.

TopTen,, slap, slap, slap, remember what your father said to you years ago, if it works won't Fix it, ok enought of that lecture, you have a good radio in the 2517, if you want it fixed you will have to really good radios, but the problem with having two base units you feel like they are your children and you can not favor just one, and then it bothers you not to use the other, I have three bases, I drive myself nuts, but I have all the time in the world to use them. It's your money lets spend it,

Get it fixed talk to tech 671, send it to copper if you can, radio's like the dx 2517 are worth it.

I agree that you should get it repaired and properly aligned by a real tech with real test equipment and a knowledge of export radios. I had this done to my Galaxy 2517 and it is a terrific radio. Everyone in town has asked to buy it, but I wont let it go.

Karate... Taz is just that and we swap notes off the board almost daly...... but i still got to PICK on him LOL. He reminds me of myself in 1963 when i started electronics school and can see he will become on of the young men this country needs for our next generation of leaders. I have spent the last 20 years tring to help handicapped kids 12 of thoes i ran little league teams for them ..... some have done ok and have jobs most like my own son who is 19 cannot even talk but you got to try to give them a bit of childhood. Its going to be up to the young men like Taz to carry on and for the oldtimers like us to pass down to them the knolage that you just dont find in books.
