The mic on the Magnum 257 does a great job! Only trouble is, it is too light and feels flimsy in your hand. I found a way to add some heft that is quick and simple. Get some coax sealer from your local R-shack,[the sticky black stuff that comes in a small white box on a roll]. Next get a couple of medium size lead "egg" fishing sinkers from your local Walmart and hammer , the sinkers flat so as to fit the shape of the inside of the mic housing. Apply the coax sealer to the flattened sinkers, and carefully position them on the inside back half of the housing, making sure that everything clears the weights. Re-install the other half of the mic and check out the way the mic feels in your hand. Now thats more like it! If you are using this radio mobile, it makes it much easier to put the mic back in the holder and it stays in place a lot better. The only other gripe I have, is with the control knobs. My vision isn't that great and in low light conditions, I have a hard time seeing the position of the control knobs due to the lack of a pointer that is very visible. The solution is to get some bright yellow, or white plastic model paint and carefully fill in the indentation that is used for a position pointer. Let it dry well and you now have a way to see the position even in low light conditions. I have found that the material that the knobs are made of doesn't allow most types of paint to stick to them very well. Make sure that you clean the knobs with paint thinner or alcohol before applying the paint and that it is completly dry before using them. I use a toothpick or straight pin to apply the paint. If you screw it up the first time, just wipe it off with a little thinner and try again. When done right, it will look like it was made that way.
Overall, I think this model is a great little radio that is hard to beat for the money! Hope some of you owners of the Magnum 257 or similar models using the same basic set up and who have experienced the same minor problems mentioned above, find this helpful. 73 and have a great holiday season! 405

Put a D104M6 hand held on the little 257...Really works well.
