This Antenna is every mans dream, an Antenna with a BIG coil. I tested this antenna with a magmount and with a mobile ground plane as recommended by a person I met talking on the radio.
First, I must say I was a little concerned about how it would stay on the roof with 1 magnet. Well, I got up to 65 with out any issues.
I tested the SWR readings on a Magnum 257 converted radio. Just like the ad says, I got a good match from 26-29 witout adjustment. I ran the whip all the way in and got a good match with is the entire band range advertised. What can I say, If you can deal with to gowdy look of this big coil on the top of your car, this is definitely the antenna to get for you import radio.
All over the band, I found it to perform just like a FG antenna, but with more input and output gain. I was talking skip all day long on AM with no added power, and this contact from Spain told me he thought I was on a base station. The ground plane definitely helps the reception greatly. Almost too good. I even tried the mobile ground plane with the FG antennas, and it even helped to bandwidth spread a little bit.
Power handling is rated for 10000 watts, but I only put 125RMS 250PEP. I get nothing but gain!!! The only problem with this antenna is on a mag mount, It seems it can talk farther than it can here with out the MGP.
Judging form my tests, with similar antenna(Solarcon, StarGun), I would definitely recommend open-coil antennas for export radios. I mainly bought the bigger one cause it looked cool...lol

I hate to break anyone's heart, but that "tri-star" is a "capacity hat" and not a ground radial kit, as they are advertising. All it does is add more meat to the radiating element. This, to a small degree, broadbands the antenna just a bit...that's all. |

I agree...the SP-3000 is a good antenna from Workman for the $price! I think it's also sold under the "Terminator" name also...on other web-sights. My shipping info. card arrived and claims: 7500 watts capability an a overall length of 69 inches. Great SWR'S and transmit. It's ideal for DX'n with a 2 or 4 pill amp in my truck. I haven't tried any other Workman models but the double coil looks interesting also ;-) ! |
