The big difference between a JoGunn, and another two element beam, is that it is built very strong. If you live in an area with a lot of high winds, the JoGunn will do you good. I had a couple of friends that had them and they performed very well.

They are pretty good performers. I helped a friend put one up a few weeks back. There is no comparison to his Antron 99. But then again it's a beam. What do you expect. It's broader and unlike the Antron has no tvi problems. However, JoGunn's so called db factors are off the wall. That is why so many people dislike the antennas. They are also very expensive to buy new. My friend traded a Galaxy 88 for a 3+3 JoGunn and a 56' Rohn tower and I believe he made a very good trade. Getting back to the db issue, look at the advertisemants of the A99, they are off the wall as well. I never hear anyone raising a big fuss about them. Maybe it's because they're priced so cheap no one really gives a rip. That's probably why I bought mine almost 10 years ago. It was, and still is, cheap (and believe me for a 16 year old kid working limited hours and who's parents couldn't afford to buy him everything under the sun, cheap was good), can be installed on a tripod without running guy wires all over the place, and is still working well with the exception of lots of blistering due to uv rays. Every month or so, someone is always bringing up JoGunn's, and in response to that someone is always offering constructive critisism towards them. This has always been an intersting subject. Keep em' coming!

Stickshift i have MANY times rased heck over a-99 and others gain. As for my comments on Jogunn any product that go out of its way to LIE about what it can do should be lambasted. EXAMPLE audio gain .... common most on cb would buy it the number of emails i got over the years show that.. heck it even sounds logical if you get RF gain why not AUDIO! Also i have stated they are well made but so are others at a lot less money. I feel its about time a standard was set for these kind of adds if you print it you must back it up with real world numbers. If you buy a jongunn and your audio just seems the same o well.

I own the Smoking Gunnll. I like It transmits and receives good.It is made very well to take the conditions up here in Iowa! However the rejection they claim does not live up to the specifications. There are good about answering questions and in my case I had trouble with the swrs and Jo Gunn sent me a new gamma match!

Well Take Care Everyone!! Gage

MY POINT .... the buyer is paying TOP buck for a antenna and 99% are buying based on GAIN ..... so if gain is compleatly inflated then the buyer is getting RIPED off.

Gage, I, too have had occasion to talk to the people at JoGunn, and they have always been nothing but nice, and as helpful as possible. They have been a nice company to deal with, and I am pleased with the performance of my 4 element beam from them. It far outperforms the Maaco antenna I had before! Bruce, check it out, be nice and maybe Santa will bring you a JoGunn next christmas!!!

Call them up and ask for the engineering documents on how to measure audio gain .... and while you have them on the phone the E and H plots done on a antenna range. See if you get any answers.....

Jogunn prays on un-informed buyers thats a cold hard fact.

My next will be a cushcraft why? it has no audio gain ..... like my hygain had. 10 Meter $200 6 meter about $100 and plots are no problem to get they are in print for all to see.

I had a Joe Gunn Beam once, and it worked pretty good after I managed to get the SWR down,(star series), it worked very well for long distance skip, and did a good job locally. I would still have them, if I had not had some bad luck with weather and relationships.

"2, 3, 4, 5 elm beams and understand gain will be about the same."

The gain of a beam relates as much to the boom length as it does to the number of elements. A 3 ele beam with a 12ft boom, will be vastly inferior to a 3 ele beam with a 18ft boom.

I know space is always a consideration, but choose the longest boom lenght you can, and the bigger the spacing (up to 9ft) between elements the better.

Gonzo ....

Gain does have limits longer CAN be better but a 1/2 wave boom and 3 elm will only have 6-8db gain. Decreasing this to 12 foot will only decrease gain a db or so ....

Yes you are right Bruce. A db here and a db there, equals 3db's pretty soon.
I was trying to point out that if you are choosing between 2 3ele beams, the one with the longer boom lenght will outperform the shorter one, no matter what the manufacturer's claims of gain are.
