I am thinking about buying a Yaesu FT2800M. What would be a good antenna to run with it? It will be going on a Toyota Tacoma pick-up with a regular cab. I have my Wilson 1000 mag mount on the top of the cab right now and I don't want to interfere with that. |

CB,
I have heard very good things about the Larsen's and know many who use them.
I personally have used the Anttron's since they first came out with the Ham Antenna's and have just never found a reason to change.
They have alway's performed flawlessley for me.

radial larsen is my preference for public service customers. if they do not state an antenna, radial larsen is what they get.
i have had their 5/8w vhf antenna on my truck going on 5yrs now and it still looks almost brand new.
but you will pay much more for larsen than the link tech808 gave. the anttron that coppers has above is also a dual band antenna. |

I use Diamond's. Whatever it you get just make sure and get a 5/8 wave. |

Diamond makes a good 2 meter antenna. The SG-2000HD is a 7/8 wave antenna with 5.2 DB gain. Put this on the center of your vehicle's roof and you'll be working a lot of stations with that Icom IC-V8000. |

i like the hustler 5 db gain colinear use one on murs with great results only 7+ foot tall! |

CB, two things to consider:
Gain/Antenna pattern...if you're running around alot of mountains or hillsides you will want a plain ole 1/4 wave antenna. The patterns of gain antennas will perform worse in hilly terrain.
Height of antenna...and going through car washes, drive thru's, etc.
Also, Larsen antennas are notoreous for becoming corroded and hard to remove from their mounts.

mr. rf, i haven't noticed the larsen having any more of a corrosion problem than any other type antenna that uses an nmo mount. infact, the mount is where we have had the majority of our corrosion problems. |

CB, forgot to say I use a Comet SBB-1 antenna. Its 16" tall, black rubber coated and looks like a scanner or cheap HELP CB emergency kit antennas but its actually very rugged, flexible as heck and can't hardly destroy it unless you beat it with a hammar, dual band 2m/440 and performs great on both bands! Its only drawback is it's 60 watts max power rating, however I use mine at 70 watts with no trouble.
I have it mounted about 10 inches from a Big Mama and both work great with no noticible interference between each other. |

Well, the Anttron will allow you to cover the 2 Meter / 70 CM Bands and cover the range you want.
As for the Larsen Antenna's I will leave that for Tech8541 as I have never used one and he has far more experience with the Radial Larsen Dual Band antenna's than I do.

808 answered the anttron question. since i don't know if you were asking for the larsen or the anttron, or both, i'll put in my 2 cents on the larsen. we don't use the dual band antennas, but i have seen them in tessco (part# 18168) for the range you asked about. there is also a maxrad and antennex dual band listed.
cbblackbeard, one other thing. since you have your wilson on the roof, the larsen 5/8w would work well without interfernce to the wilson if it was mounted on the fender. you would need an L-bracket for this. the bracket will be screwed down inside the fender where the hood closes down beside the fender. it then comes up and takes a 90* turn over the fender so you can open and close your hood. the next time you see a police car with antenna mounted all over the trunk, look closely and you will see this bracket. |

The antenna Pig040 has is the Diamond HV7A. I have the same one, but have not yet mounted it on the Jeep. Specs are on line all over the place.

Thanks for that Barracuda, I checked it all over with my MFJ, but didnt remember the numbers. One thing though on the stats it says to 148 for the two meter, but I scan all the way up in the high 150's, and it works fine, it goes higher than the normal band on 440 too. Antenna works well for me mounted above my horizontal antenna on the tower. |
