I am confused about operating this radio. What is the best way to use the Top Gun Modulator? Does the power need to be turned up or down while using the modulator. I was told that it sounded better with the modulator off and the power up.can anyone help with the proper use of these 2 functions. Either way radio checks come back wall to wall.

Jammer80,

Ok with the TOP GUN MODULATOR in the ON Position you can set the carrier to as low as 1 watt and swing 50.

With the TOP GUN MODULATOR in the OFF Position it allows you to use the PWR Knob to control the Variable RF Power Output amount you want to use from 1 watt to 50.

Look in your Owners Manual to find FRONT PANEL CONTROLS.

#6 PWR-AMT,
Cover's the Operation when the TOP GUN MODULATOR is OFF.

#10 TOP GUN MODULATOR - OFF,
Cover's the operation/use of the TOP GUN MODULATOR.

Hope this helps.

That helps. I also called Bob F and he helped explain it also. I get real good radio checks with and without the Top gun. so I wanted tto make sure I was using it right. I seem to talk a long way and I hear a long way as well. Thanks for the fast reply.

Help me clear up a little confusion on thee S3. How does the SWR warning light function since it is incorporated with the Trans/receive light?

8 ball,

WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM!

Now for your question.

From the Owners Manual:

FRONT PANEL CONTROLS

#13. RX/TX/SWR Receive, Transmit and High SWR Warning Indicator LED. A two color LED that is green when the receiver is active and red while the transmitter is active.

SWR warning light Iluminates when the antenna's standing wave ratio is over the recomended ratio of 2 to 1.

REAR PANEL

#4. SWR Dection Circuit ON/OFF Switch

This switch turns the Magnum S-3's SWR dection circuit on or off. When turned Off, the SWR warning light on the front panel will not illuminate.

Hope this helps explain how it works.

Big I,

The SuperStar DM-452 Hand Echo Mic also works VERY WELL with the MAGNUM S-3 with the Echo just "barely" open.

You should get at least 40w PEP with TG on out the box. It's with TG off where you might not get the most audio you should, that's where the tune comes in. I would have a qualified tech tune radio. I get approx. 35-40 clean watts PEP with TG off and RK56 mic.

I run it barefoot as for the radio I really like it's appearence and features such as variable power, all mode talkback etc. As far as performance it talks and hears well.I use it with a RK56 and pretty much leave the TG off because with it on it has so much gain I have to play with mic gain so I'd rather just run mic gain wide open without it.

why use an echo mic on a radio that has echo?

I love my magnum, stock mic is great, I run it with a modified Cobra 650 amp and blast away anything..."World-Wild Horsefly" in Alabama said that, and I am steppin' out...
