Every once in a while the lights on the meters light up really bright. What does this mean? What causes this?

There is a possibility that you may have a voltage regulator problem in either your radio or in your power supply itself.

Tech 548,

I have my radio plugged into a power strip that is plugged into the wall outlet.

Also, my radio used to dead key 5 watts. Now it dead keys about 3 1/2 watts on channel 1 , and about 6 watts on channel 40. What is that about?

I think the first thing I would check would be the SWR. Just make sure everything is OK with your coax and antenna.

If you have a good dummyload, check your power into that and see if you get the same or better RF power readings. I have seen high SWRs do weird things with regulators if RF is getting to them.

As far as the voltage regulators go, you have them in both the power supply section AND mounted on the chassis of the PC board. A schematic of your radio would be of great help to you.

As far as getting a now lower deadkey, it's possible that you may have a voltage regulator problem in the power supply itself. Here's something you can try. Where the DC positive and negative wires hook to the main PC board from the output side of the power supply, do a voltage check there. Compare the standing voltage against the voltage "under load". In other words, when the radio is keyed and when it's unkeyed.

If the voltage is dropping when the radio is keyed, then you have a power supply problem.

Jeff.

Bluegrass has it pegged.
if the weather alert does'nt get your attention maybe those lights will.
i remember the 1st time i plugged that thing in, i thought, OH-KNOW.
and when it went off at 2 in the morning, i thought there was a police raid.
