Freebird, 300/600 mean's you can roughly expect 300 Watts Output when using AM/FM/CW and around 600 Watts Output on SSB with 1 to 4 watts input / dead key power. Solid State (2) MRF422 Input Power: 1-4 Watts Output Power: 300/600 Watts http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodW90-KLV550+ Hope this help's explain it. Be careful with the KLV550. If you push them to hard there is a high falure rate with these amps. Lately i've seen many of this model fry the finals. Those amps appear to be a little overated on power. |

Freebird, As I mentioned in my other post. Try and keep the Dead Key to around 2 1/2 to 3 watts input and it should last forever with great performance. Lon Tech808 |

Can someone explain how KL seems to get ( or at least advertise ) double the AM wattage on SSB ? I have run lots of amps, they all would do more on SSB but only like 25%. 600 watts PEP from a KLV 550 seems a bit high thats all. Thanks. |

Butcher318, Hmmmmmmmmmm, I have never owned or used the KLV 550 before so time for you KLV-550 Owner's to step up and let us know what you get out of your 550's. HOWEVER, I DO GET MORE THAN DOUBLE THE AM POWER ON SSB WITH OUR KLV1000 AMPLIFIER. Lon Tech808

ok as stated in another post, ive had or used all of the klv amps, i believe i had one of the first klv550s that came out, at the time the ad said up to 10 watt drive, got the amp and the klv book said 7 watt drive, the company i got said amp from had a flyier that said no more then 5 watt drive?? confussing yet?? huummm!! lol. ok, drove mine at the dk wattage so that on an audio on a swing, the dk was 1/4 the swing!! like on low or #1 setting on the 6 position power switch, if amp wood swing to a 250 watts moved the varable power on radio so it was 1/4 the swing rate, like dk at, 65watts?? i have seen up to 550 watts on am and 600 ssb?? i was using a 2985 rci that swings to 30 watts, usually the dk is around 11/2 to 21/2watts on the radio!! this is on a diamond sx100 swr and power meter!! hope this helps some of your ???s |

Butcher318, this is not a fair assessment as I'm having some radio difficulties, but I can reach around 350 on both AM and SSB. Now I agree I should be seeing more on SSB but I relate that directly back to my "injured" radio vice the amp. As much as I like the looks, operation and general playing with my 550, I must agree that 600 watts seems a bit extreme. FWIW, my radio swings to 18 watts on SSB. Yes it used to double that, and should do more but as stated, it's not it a great state of mind right now. On AM, carrier set at 2.5 watts swinging to 12. Max watts around 350 on the KLV set at power level 6. Now I will 100% agree that many of the max wattage advertisements seem extreme, being I'm only running what I believe to be one out of two finals on my radio now, I can't reach the max power to be sure. I need to grab the Lincoln from the truck but it's buried and very hard to remove (theft proofed). It's PEP on SSB might get me closer, but 600??? I think you are correct. On the other hand, I know a "tech" in Florida that would show on his meter this amp reaching over a 1000 watts so maybe it all depends on the meter LOL! He ran a CB shop and man could his meter make you feel really good! (although the numbers you could see for yourself on his meter were very unrealistic). His meter seemed to love harmonics. ok, as far as seeing the #s i was seeing, like i said radio was capable of at least 30 to 35 watt swing!! also on a cobra 25 with a 18 watt swing, the amp seemed to do like yours alan on am?? i do no that the klv line likes low dk, and at least 25 to maybe 30 watt swing?? any more swing and i think the swamping resistors kick in and send it to the dump?? lol.. ive also seen some (wild) #s come off of some meters?? thats probley why i went ahead and got the sx100 meter from diamond!!! makes alot of what use to be nice big #s come back to reallity?? lol. at times hurts a persons thinking on how bad his amp WAS.. lol. my nickles up, thanks for all.. |
