Is it best for me to have a fan mounted to the amp for it to perform at it's best?

Not for better performance necessarily but for longer life. I use two small bungy cords and have a 4.75 inch fan attached to my KL-500 right on the cooling fins. Keeps it nice and cool. I purchased the fan from Radio Shack for less than $20. If nothing else it is more than worth my piece of mind and I am very pleased with this amp.
Heat and too much input power are big contributors to shortened amp life. I don't overdrive it and I keep it nice and cool...
