I like this radio ALOT, although it doesn't quite put out 45 watts AM, its a good radio, excellent reports so far, most people can't believe I'm using the stock mike. However the "Top Gun" modulator is more hype than reality. Switching it on and off provides little difference in audio.
It doesn't drift much at all, and appears to be right on frequency, just as counters says.

The reciever section is very good, I have compared it against my HR2510 and my older Cobra 148GTL.
Way better than the HR2510, and just about as good as the Cobra, but not quite.
-----------------
All in all I'm very pleased with it.

Gonzo,

I have found that when we talk to someone within 30 miles they are unable to hear the effects of the Top Gun Board or it over loads there receivers and sounds distorted a little to them.

On long distance when DXing it does make a difference and works great.

On the Sunday CEF Nets people even think I change antennas when we use the top gun modulator, hehehe

It also helps if you are drawing your power direct from the battery with the newer radios.

Glad you like it.

Now you need to sign up and join the CEF Membership and join us on the Sunday CEF Nets.

I own both the S-3 and S-9. I use the S-3 barefoot with a wilson 5000 magnet mount. The S-9 is used as my base unit, barefoot with an MFJ meter and Radio Shack Crossbow base antenna. Stations 5 to 15 miles can hear and see the difference when "Top Gun Modulator" is engaged. You can see it too, throw a meter in line. People here can not tell the difference except when I am moving between the two radios. And I have gotten nothing but compliments "Loud" and no-one believes I am barefoot.

We use the SuperStar DM-452 & Overdrive CDL-56K Mobile Mics on ours. (Red)
Because the Forummaster and the Copper Group sent Shirley / 1st Sargant the Red Mic to match her New Red Truck for her Birthday Present.

Both Mics worked GREAT with the Magnum S-9.

Capt hook,

You will find the review on the MAGNUM S-9 in the Subscriber (Preview) Area of the Forum here then click on Product Reviews and you will see S-9 click on it and start reading.

This is the area where you will find ALL of the Reviews on various products written by the Techs and Copper Forum Members.

Sometime when you get a chance just click on every catagory on the Copper Forum and you will find tons of articles and areas for different topics or you can always use the Search box also.

Hope this helps.

Capt hook,

Well, so far over the years we have not found any Mobile antenna yet that out performs the Wilson 1000 or 5000 in actual use with our S-9 or any other radio we decide to stick in and use.

Dale,

We have used the Monkey Made MM9s for years and also used / tested the Predator 10K Single Coil 12" shaft and the 10K Double Coil 12" shaft and None of them gave us the overall performance that the Wilson 1000 or 5000 did in testing them on our vehicles.

The Only Antenna that came very close for us in overall performance was the Astatic 3K Trucker Antenna.

No fancy lab testing of them but actual testing when out Snow plowing in our vehicles and several hundred thousand miles of OTR Driving.

We have tried them Hard Mounted as well as with Mag Mounts and the Wilson 1000 is our top choice for everything.

Just my / our personal experience.

never noticed any diffs between single or double coil antennas, but still prefer my 20" shaft single coil predator(need another, who's selling them now, or are they gone, old website is inactive) over all others, though wilson 5000 is close to it. put an astatic 3k on my durango last weekend to check, lower swr and no mic bite vs wilson 2000, band was quiet though couldn't check on dx and only reliable local was 5 or 6 miles away and he noticed no differences...
