I have a RCI 2850 and am thinling about a Galaxy dx-95T.
I am concerned, having never heard one, how does the SSB sound on the Galaxy?

SSB Drift -> The 95T?
What modle do you have and does ot drift, even after heatup?
Anyone else have that problem? |

I've had great luck with Uniden SSB radios. They drift very little after they've reached operating temperature, and generally not that much from cold to warm.
I don't know how good newer Galaxy radios are, but the older units were notorious for drifting badly. A friend of mine had a Pluto and that radio drifted more when it was warm than my Uniden did from cold to warm. He constantly had to touch up his clarifier. Another friend had an 88 and it was just as bad. They're both at least 8 years old now. |

My 93T is a little off frequency when cold (in the car) but easily adjusted with the fine clarifier. As it warms up she goes back on frequency. Not a big deal to me.
Great reports on SSB and it is a great receiver, underated IMO.
I have not owned a Ranger Radio yet but hope to in the future.

Ranger is no different -I have been told I am off freq when the unit is cold, or just powered up.
I am thinking that the 95T or the 99V look good to me because of the dual clarifyer and the fact that th clarifyer can adjust the transmit.
That could mean that when I tune into someone, he will hear me when I answer.
I am leaning in that direction, besides -it makes life easier sharing mics back and forth.
I am also thinking that a direct link to the power amp has to be cleaner tjan running a KLV. |

I like my ranger the best for sideband cause it don't drift like Odell said. And all the Galaxy 95T's I've heard sound distorted on am. Ilike Galaxy radio's don't get me wrong I own four of them, but the ranger I like best for ssb talking.

I think my Ranger is the best sounding SSB that I have ever owned, I agree.

It doesn't really make any difference what kind of SSB radio anyone owns and/or uses.
Whether you paid $25.00 for it at a garage sale or $2,500 for it over-the-counter, it will have some thermal drift on sideband until it reaches it's operating temperature. Some will be more noticable than others. That's just the nature of the beast.
Sideband drift of course is more pronounced than A/M because you are only using a small portion of a given frequency. On A/M, you will rarely notice any frequency drift because A/M uses far more of the frequency. And F/M uses even more. That's why SSB has a higher efficiency rating that A/M and F/M combined. In otherwords, nothing outperforms SSB other than CW.
I'M getting off the subject here....
Ambious air temperature has a great deal to do with this also. Some radios will drift more than others just as some will have less of a thermal drift because not all ocillators are wound exactly alike and not all crystals are cut and manufactured the same way.
Another thing to contend with is the internal heat generated from the radio itself caused by the (believe it or not) light bulb. And let's not forget the heat generated from the audio chip, voltage regulators, drivers and finals, just to name a few.
In a nutshell, all A/M-F/M-SSB radios will have some thermal drift no matter what their cost---new or used.

I have a rci 2950 DX,here in Minnesota it gets pretty cold in the winter time.
I have noticed when below -0 it takes it a while to warm up before you can change the channels.
Thats the only thing I that I see wrong with it other than that the best radio I have ever owned.

RCI makes Galaxy now and Texas Star amps. RCI is a better radio to work on and repair but have their downsides. It's about what you like. I am a 95T man.

Ranger has Manufactured the Galaxy Radios for Galaxy to Galaxy Specifications for a some time now.
The Texas Star line of Amplifiers is completely Owned / Manufactured by Galaxy with no ties to Ranger.
None of this is new news or just happened recently.

Who makes Connex? Who makes Northstar? What about Texas Star? Ranger or Galaxy?(sic) It is called "labeling" in marketing lingo. It helps us identify the products that have the traits that we each prefer. It is good.
I love this forum. The people who know things are responsible to the manufacturers and us with a good balance. The mystery with the background of the radio is fun, it adds an allure.
Also, good reviews and knowledge shared on the track record of each individual piece of equipment helps us as consumers and it gives the MFR feedback as to what we want and what we will not tolerate.
Believe it or not, I have seen the influence of this forum on the market for CB radios in the last few years. I think it has been very positive. The producers and consumers both benefit here.
With that said I like the Lincoln first, the 2950dx second and the ss158 third. As honorable mention, I will always like the Galaxy DX99.

As exspensive as these radios are nowadays especially ones with SSB I would be tickled to have any one of them. There all awesome rigs in my opinion!
We hold opinions in everything from the cars we drive to which frozen pizza is the best!
I'm just glad I live in a country with so much to choose from, you could say we are a bit spoiled. Is it not great?

I agree there Ken. One man loves Chev the other one loves Ford. Those that know better love Chrysler....lol. I just wish i lived there with the amount of choice as you said, we get next to zip here as far as 27mhz cb is concerned. You want expensive? Try a radio shop in Sydney sells the 2970DX on special order for $999.00 plus shipping. I am so jealous of you guys.....lol.
