Doubling your power shows up as about 1/2 an S-unit. Not worth it in my opinion. The most important factor is your antenna. If you've got a good antenna and good operating technique you should be able to make contacts. If you can hear them, they should be able to hear you too.

Something happened to the second part of my post--I meant to say I have a few amps capable of 250 watts or more, but I run them at just over 100 watts--they stay cool and happy that way, and never have to go see the Doctor.

Roughly about another 21 miles if conditions are right (ground-wave), sky wave maybe a little more if you antenna is high enough. There are many variables to consider so take that value with a grain of salt.

And here we have good advice and another factual lesson learned from Highlander and Hollowpoint.

Good posts.

If your talking about a base set up then a 2970 should be just fine. If you want to talk farther get your antenna up in the air more or look into a beam antenna. Going from say 40 to 70+ feet up will make great improvement. If your talking about a mobile a good 2 pill amp with 2879's will do a very nice job of local and DX talking.
