Nickel Put simply, NO! It's never wise to run a amplifier and radio on the same power supply. Besides, 3 amps will barely (if at all) support 18-20 watts. Jeff Tech548 |

I am running my Grant LT on my KLV-550 P/S, with good results. Radio only deadkeys 1.5 and modulates to around 7 watts, so it doesn't pull too hard. Before that I ran a Roadpro Titan II (single final clone of Magnum 257) on it with no problem. The Amplifier section of the 550 works really well with single final radios, I've had some trouble using dual final or higher powered radios on it. It is a VERY low drive amp with the 1407's in it. The older MRF 422 ones could take a little more drive than the new ones can. |

Crackerjack, Turn your Dead Key / Input Power down to about 2 to 2-1/2 Watts and you would be set to start talking. Amplifiers cannot tell if your radio is a Single or a Dual Final Radio. The only thing they see / recognize is the Input Drive Power. Lon Tech808 |

Lon, On my JB-76B there is what looks like a set screw to adjust the input power. There is also a scale on the front of the amp and it says "set to line". If I set the input to the line, could I see a drop in wattage on the meter that is on my 696F-SSB? For example: my 696 dead keys 5 watts. After I set the input to the specified line, it drops to 2.5 watts Is this normal? |

cbblackbeard: I have the KLV 550. Dead key Input is 2.5W, with amp showing 125 watts output. I was told that you do not want to push the amp to much and that the above settings were what they should be. What kind of amp do you have now, the one with the line to show the setting? |

You could even drop your deadkey a little lower if you wanted...your#'s sounds about right for what your input is. What does your radio swing to and what does the amp show with that swing? Best to have a low deadkey with lots of swing caused by the modulation(your voice). Will make your amp last longer. I run my current KL with a 1 1/2 watt deadkey and swing to 10 watts on the input. |

Brewdirect The way you have your radio set up for driving a linear couldn't be better. Your amplifier will more than likely run cooler and outlive many others since they insist on running a heavier RF input. Good setup. You obviously know what you're doing and the reason why it's done that way. Jeff Tech548 |
