I found a brand new K-40 dynamic hand mic at a surplus store. I know these have been discontinued for several years. The paperwork was not in the box. Can anyone tell me anything about this mic ??? It was pre=wired for Uniden radios. Works great on my cobra 40. I seldom use CB but if I need it I want it to work well. I also noticed that the back of the mic is magnetic so no mic clip is needed, just put it to some metal on the radio or dash..

Is this the famous K40 Speech Processor mic? If it is, it will say so in red lettering on the back.

If it is the Speech Processor mic, you have quite a find there. I know plenty about them. If it is not the S.. mic, then I don't know.

Tech833 - Is the K40 mic as good as a Tuner M+3 in your opinion? I dig compression microphones in general, is the K40 worth hunting down?

It doesn't say Speech Processor on the back. I opened it up and there is no curcuitry in it other than the switch, mic cartridge and the magnet in the rear. The original price sticker on it from several years ago said 19.95.. I paid 5.00.. It seems to work well... I thought there was a special K-40 mic out there and didn't know if this was one of them...

445, YES! I have one even though I do not have a radio for it. It is an extraordinary microphone. The M+3 compressor is not as selective as the K40. The K40 also does not need any batteries. It charges up when you are in receive mode. then, when you transmit, it uses the stored energy. You can talk for about 4 minutes straight before the cap drains enough so that you only have a dead carrier.

Wayne, you have the standard K40 mic. $5 was a good deal. The ceramic cartridge in it is worth more than that.

Tech 833,

Ive just picked up a second hand K40 speech processor MK2. It has no high/low tone switch like the original Mk1 version and also it has no pot on the back to adjust gain like the mk1. The element inside has "astatic" wrote on it. My friend bought it brand new many years ago and it has definatley had no mods. The paper work with it says that "charlie" chip is now self adjusting in this MK2 version.

I want to wire it for my Kenwood TS-50 for use on SSB. Do I have to do the diode mod or is there enough voltage on the TX out pin of the Kenwood to charge cap?

Thanks

Tim
