About how much is a 30 foot tower? And where do I find one?

Bob P,
When your driving, keep an eye out in peoples yards for towers that are not being used.
If you have Bargain Sheets (Papers) where you live, place an ad that your looking for tower.
New Tower, not sure who stocks it anymore.
Maybe do a search on the net & call them.

Before you buy / put up a tower check your building codes .......
Here in Fla you MUST HAVE A LICENSED ENGINEER DO THE INSTALL .................. |

I remember buying a tower back in the 70's and it wasn't too expensive then. But the sites I've found on the internet do not seem to list any under $1200.00 or so even for the shorter towers.

Like Road worrior said, look around your neighborhood or in neighboring cities. With satellite tv and cable, chances are you will find several towers standing not being used.
If you talk to the home owner they will let you have it for taking it down.
Here where I live there are 3 within a few blocks that I know are not being used. |

Dx431 thanks I will do that, the T.V. reception in my area is really very poor. We live in a mountain comunity about 70 miles from L.A. with a large mountain range between here and there. So there is the possability that some old towers might have been put up before cable and satalite t.v. came into the area.

Bob I got a tower off a friend of mind 50$ for 40 feet of Rohn 25g tower in 10 foot sections an a 15 foot pipe . |

Dodgeman That is a sweet deal. I was really surprised when I started looking at the cost of new towers. But it looks like I'm probably pretty much stuck using my tri-pod and maybe 14 feet of mast pipe on top of the house. That will put me at 34 feet exactly to the feed point of the antenna. |

They do make a 10ft. Tri-pod roof(tower).
Type in Easy up Tripods in Keyword.

Check out your local Radio Shack(s) Bob. If you don't mind using a telescoping push-up mast, they have a 36 foot model, also a 19 footer. The 36 is being discontinued and is NOT listed on their web site, what is left is the stock on store shelves. It needs guying(it has rings attached for this) and I got one for my Antron 99 for only $49.00. It has held up just fine for me- happy shopping! |

universal towers has a 30ft. tower for about $350.00 and glen martin engineering has one for about the same price or if you know how to weld theres a book for sale on internet auction sites called "how to build a 30 foot freestanding fold-over tower"it tells you every thing you need to know to build your own tower except how to weld and it says you can do it for about $100.00. |

Here is something you might want to consider:
Go to your local Hardware super store, and look for an 24 - 40 ft aluminum ladder. These are sometimes on sale for relatively easy prices.
In the colapsed position (12 - 20 feet)
Sink the bottom of the ladder into the ground firmly by either concrete or other means, brace the top of the ladder to the side of your house, chimney,or whatever with L-brackets.
Bolt a 10 - 20 foot mast onto the side of the ladder steps with U-bolts,letting mast sit along side of ladder for now. Bolt your antenna (preferably Omni directional) antenna to top of your antenna mast.
Add guy ropes to about 5 feet below the top of extension section of the ladder.
Push your antenna mast up as far as you want leaving about 5 feet or so, attached to the side of the ladder and bolt down. Then using the rope that comes in the middle of the ladder extend the ladder so that it now reaches as far as you wish. secure your guy wires.
A 40 foot ladder and 20 feet of masting, gives you an antenna tower that is about 55 feet high. And if your neighbors have issues, then only raise it up when you need all of it.

The ONLY problem with making your own is the local building codes. Here in florida you must be able to PROVE it will take 125 MPH winds with the antenna on it. Heck i like gonzos idea now if only i could sell that inspector on it.

I used 3 10 foot sections of heavy wall conduit.It threads together and only cost me about 80 bucks.It works really well too! |

I heard a mention about telescoping masts. They are okay except for a couple of things. They are usually a thin wall tubing of aluminum. And they push up just fine. The problem comes in when after a few storms the top sections have bent a little. It doesn't take much.
Then what happens when you try to telescope the top sections down is: it will not move because now it is bent and will not go down into the larger tube below. You wind up being stuck with a 30-40 telescoping mast which is now much harder to take down than initially thought.
If you use a telescoping mast, you MUST guy each section above your attachment point, or this WILL happen to you. |

Here in East Texas towers are everywhere. Lot's of people still/were on the TV antenna. I checked American Classifieds. The stars were aligned and I found a 50 footer for free if I took down three or four days after getting a base and antenna for free. I drove about 70 miles to get it with a fellow CB'er and another CB'er helped me get it all the way up. I am in business now. Check around in the country. I will be Syklopz once fully registered. |
