I just bought this radio. Can anyone give me some insight on it. Any recommended mods? Mic preference?
Thanks,

It sounds good with D-104 mikes either handheld or stand. If you get it expanded to cb you lose most of 10 meters. That was a big gripe for me. I can go below 26 mhz but no higher than 28.315. I never did understand that.

On the plus side, it is one of the loudest radios around and the ears are among the best.

Beantown,

Look to the LEFT of the Forum Here and you will see:

Tools

Under that you will see:

Modification List

CLICK on it and scroll down to Galaxy DX2517 and you will find a lot of information that I have listed there.

Hope this helps.

Mike, Jeff and Lon,
Thanks for the replies. This radio seems to really talk nice. I don't trust where it was tuned up at so it may have to make a trip to 8451 if ya know what I mean. Just have to wait till I get over the funds er low syndrom after buying the radio! I'm gunna try to make contact on the CEF net this weekend to see how it does!
Thanks again,
Shane

Beantown, you won't be sorry if you have it tuned by Tech8541--He did mine for me, removed bad modification done by another shop, upgraded a few components like the AM mod amp, Voltage regulator, NB and AM detection diodes, and did a thorough alignment/tune-up.

Every CBer in my town has tried to buy it from me at one time or another. I will never sell it. That ought to tell you something.

Hey Highlander,
That mod your talking about, mine was supposed to have been removed. I won't mention any names here cause the shop was fantastic as far as the deal was concerned! But I think I know what mod your talking about! ;)
See ya,
Shane

Well, it was a poorly done variation of one of the "swing" mods out there. It was part of what used to be known as a "turbo-tune" from a company down in Texas.

The radio came back with drastically better receiver performance after SS8541 got done with it.

And for those who do not know who SS8541 is,

He is none other than our own Copper Tech8541

He is also the Tech that Copper Recommends for ALL Out of Warranty Repairs and Modifications that you may need or want performed.

You can reach him at:

Has anyone been able to get it to go above 28.315 mhz?

Why was the 2517dx so limited on 10 meters? What a great talking radio to be so limited.

They are marketed for the CB/Freeband user, not Hams. The "Ten Meter" thing is just a loophole to get them into the country--They are a Bootleg CB, not a ham radio.
