what is the name of the groundplane antenna that looks like a astro plane upside down? It also has a gamma match on it I thought it, was made by jogunn but couldn;t locate it .. |

I think you might be talking about either the JG AR Pistol, or the JG AR Hillbilly. Both are quarter wave groundplane antennas. The Pistol has a Gamma match on just the vertical element, while the Hillbilly has a gamma on both the vertical element and on one of the radials (for horizontal polarization).
I know a guy who has the Hillbilly, it works quite well. Is it worth the money they want for one? Not so sure, I'd take an Imaxx2000 and put the savings to good use. |

Co 786 thanks for the pic of the old sigma 4 antenna I couldn;t see if it had a gamma match or not.Highlander the guy I heard talking on 11 meters describe the antenna as having a gamma match and a groundplane.But this guy had the whole channel locked down and only 20ft off the ground, he also advised he put a 20.000 watt gamma match on it so I'm assumming he was runnning a lot of power just curious about the antenna.I took my antron99 down and put up a imaxx 2000 plus all new rg213 coax. |

The Sigma 4 was gama fed. You can see that in the manual lnk. If you find another antenna that looks like an upside down Astroplane please post it.

They are built in Italy. $150.00 US. This antenna is a variation on the J-pole antenna design. Some people (hams) love J-poles others hate them. They give a low angle of radiation, and they tend to be very narrow banded.
J-poles need to be erected in a clear area, away from trees or other wires or metallic surfaces. This is true of most metallic antennas, but especially true of the J-pole design. Its funny that you brought this thread up now, I already have one of these antennas on order, and I will try to test it within a month or so. |

Hi Gonzo,
I would be interested in your tests of the Sirio Vector 4000. I also own one here in the UK but have taken it down for winter as construction is poor compared to original Avanti Sigma 4, which I have previously owned.
I will say one thing about both antennas. There is a different physical length between Vector 4000 and Sigma 4. The Vector 4000 is 7/8 wave and has a longer transmitting stub and four ground plane legs on the “cone”. The original Avanti Sigma 4 is ¾ wave stub and has only 3 legs on the cone. They are not the same although they look similar.
The only clone which is physically the same but even better in construction to the Avanti Siagam 4 is the TAGRA BT-104 which I also own. It performs identical….naturally.
I wish Tagra would start making these again in their factory as mine has seen better days after a good 20 + years of service. Like all TAGRA products they are gold anodized so they have resisted corrosion better than most old aluminium antennas.
I think TAGRA bought the copy writes to most Avanti designs in the early 80’s but unfortunately they only do a clone of the Astroplane these days and are more into VHF and military applications now. Shame…
By the way a word of warning about CTE and Sirio. Both companies products perform well however quality is not up to the US makes. Sirio is better than CTE for sure. Even the Italians don’t tend to use CTE that much due to the poorer quality of aluminium. They have their only secret antenna’s! It’s a company called (just to confuse matters) “Sigma Antenne”. I just got the Sirio Vector 4000, in the mail today, I should have it up in a couple of days, if the weather here stays reasonable.
I am going to compare it to a Hygain Penetrator, still IMHO the best omni out there.Certainly the best that was produced here in the states.

Cant wait for your comparisons. If you could get it up before the wkend we could make a sched this Sat/Sun? I mon. 27.535 USB. If you like add me to your MSN and I will then know when and where you are calling on freq. Im hearing East coast USA most days from 14.00Hours GMT. So will listen from then on.
